A “heavy “forest spirit army was always appealing to me and one year ago I decided to buy several start packs ( 4 of them ) and I went for it.
Slowly I built the army and even if not every miniature is painted I started to playtest and have fun with a list I am going to share with you.
After some battles, and a lot of fun with it,I started to fix the build in order to mitigate its flaws and make it more competitive and fun.
The first list I played was very similar to what I am going to post now
but the most important problem I had to solve was the use of the core Units.
Dryads are somehow “lovely” even if they have several problems.
Not having the chance of adding a Group of command ( just a champ) is going to put us in small disadvantage in the combat resolution.
Moreover we will need to solve another issue.
If we play all forest spirits we will not have banners and we are going to lose automatically in a specific scenario.
For the reasons above I had to give up the idea to play a 100% Forest spirit list and I decided to do some work arounds.
My first attempt of using dryads was the following
2 block (one horde of 40 and one unit of 10 ).
The unit of 10 will make happy lot of you because it s considered the best viable way to use them but my attention was on the beautiful main block of 40
dryads.
Probably you want to know how the horde performed.
First of all, I can say this huge unit was always considered by my opponents somehow scary ( I had also 3 branchwraith in the horde) and for this reason it was the main target of debuff spell and nuke spell.
In melee it performed not bad in my first 2 tests.
The problem I always had was to seeing them losing in combat resoolution and fleeing. All the rest of the army in my playtests performed surprisingly well ( treemen , treekin...and so on).
I wanted to make this idea work and so here you are the list I am now playing with.

Lets 's start to speak about the backbone of my army.
I am playing 4 treemen
at 2500 pts it's the max we can reach. I upgraded all of them with strangleroot.( Imho it's always worth. considering also the fact in this army we miss shooting :-)
For having 4 of them I decided to give up the Lev 4 treemen
This idea has its cons
- less effective in dispel phase - The throne of wine stuff works better on a lev 4 . and it's pretty useless on a lev 2 or 1 - the nuke spell of life will be casted with just a +2 instead of a 4 +
advantages of this choice are in my opinion more then the cos. - my general is less expensive and in case I lose him I will give up less points - I can play 4 treemen instead of 3 - I have more “punch” power and more target saturation - I can “cover” better the battlefield - a Treeman lev 4 is the main target for warmachines and once I lose him in the first or second turn everything will be so difficult because the magic phase will be completely compromised.
- i have an additional attempt to channel
considering I play also 2 Branchwraith channelling can be a “thing”
Chaff
-2 eagles are fitting perfectly they are fast , wm hunters or simply used for delaying enemies.
- 1 unit of glade riders the only unit of elves :-) they are ambushers they are there for some tactical reasons - ambusher rule makes them bit unreliable. But they are there not for making us win :-) - they can bring a banner ( my first work around to forest spirit list ) - i give them flaming banner Ambushers mean we can try to make them come on the side we will need them . They can be useful with a rear charge or flanking charge vs a unit with regeneration. Always attacking first rule + flaming attack + strenght 4 on charge can help us to make that wound needed to remove regeneration an allow our main unit ( maybe dryads or treekin) to do the rest of the job.

Special
1 unit of treekin I love them I wished to play more of them ( unit of 8 ) but I need to sacrifice eagles or a treemen for that and It's not worth . The are on a flank of the field supported by 1 or 2 treemen . They will maybe not shine but if supported they will do a great job. Really reliable and lovely unit.
Dryads
I don't agree to play them in 4 units of 10 . and I don't think 2 units of 20 or 25 can do so good. I am going to tell you why in a while. ….........
I play a unit of 44 + 2 Branchwraith + 1 BSB on stag we will have a horde of 5 complete ranks
BSB in the horde
- he is fitting the theme because of the stag which is making the elf a forest spirit so a WS 6+
- he has an AS 3+ rerollable once
- ward save 2+ vs fire
- on the stag he has 3 wounds instead of 2
- he is a Bsb so here we have our second banner in the army
- he adds a bonus in combat resolution and helps our dryads in melee
- he and his stag add some punch to the unit
- he has crown of command and makes the unit of dryads stubborn!
- in case the unit loses in combat resolution we are stubborn with L 9 rerollable
- from distance he could be a target but vs light shooting the huge unit of dryads protect him very well.
Vs sniping or wm he can be for sure a target because of No LOS but still we can count on 4 treemen for target saturation . If he is the target of wm then our treemen will be save before combat.
- in melee his AS 3+ ( rerollable ), Ward Save 6+, 2+ ws vs flame are making him quite reliable
BUT I add more.
2 Branchwraith are in the same unit and I should always try to give the the signature spell of life. Generally is not percieved so dangerous and it will be not dispelled...twice! Adding a regeneration 5+ will make our Dryads , heroes and BSB much more protected . Moreover we can heal the bsb in case He took a wound before.

MAGIC
I try to assign spells to the 2 treemen before and then to the heroes. Generally once of them will get the nuke spell and It's ok for me. And if I am lucky I will have also flesh to stone. The heroes should have always the signature spell if not possible on both, alt least one of them should have.
Main stategy From distance we should try to cast nuke spell on the most powerful enemy unit once we are in melee casting flesh to stone on our dryads is a priority Toughness 6......is a thing Generally will be dispelled because nobody wants to front an horde of dryads with Toughness 6! But this will give us the chance to give reg 5+ to the unit and protect them better. we can heal maybe also a wound to a Lord /hero. It' s not a game changer but we need to support the main block in all the ways possible.
Dryads Horde
Dryads will provide 13 attacks from the first rank + 18 from the second and third rank ( if they are all in base contact ) 31 attacks rerollable on the first turn of melee with WS 4 -6 attacks Strenght 4 with WS 6 rerollable from the 2 Branchwraith - D3 impact hits ( if he charge) + 2 attacks strenght 5 WS5 from the stag - 3 attacks form the bsb WS 6 Strenght 4 ( or 5) from te BSB 42 attacks at least ( eleven at strenght 4 or bit more)
Due to our Initiative often we will attack first and due to the composition of the unit, we will get these number of attacks even if we lose 20 dryads before melee!!! it's not a very manouvrable unit but it's nothing to laugh at . It will grind the opponent in a fight giving us the time to flank charge with treeman or treemen … Playing Dryads in his way has a the great advantage to make the signature spell count and flesh to stone really count.
It will give us the confidence to front nasty units and It will be the right anvil ( yeah I say anvil) for flank charging with treemen or treekin.
They are not a top unit but this is a way I suggest you to play them. Making them stubborn is the key and give them all this ranks will absolutely make them work.
Lore of life is a defensive lore. I can just say that once in melee we are going to win simply investing in our defence. Encreasing toughness is very good and so it's regeneration. All in all they have Immune to psycology fear Ward save 6+ hatred Weapon skill 4 2 attacks so they can do a good job.
Strenght 3 is a problem but we cannot do anything here unless we invest in a wizard lore of beast. The problem is that we will offer an easy target... the signature spell will be always dispelled and for adding him we have to sacrifice maybe the bsb, a treemen , or other important element.
Drycha
Drycha is a cool Character but I won't use his special rule for the dryads and ok she is a Lev 2 lore of shadow but she costs us like a treeman with strangleroot or like a unit of 6 Treekins. So No way...really. )

I love this theme! The Groot alliance. Let us know how it goes. 4 treemen is brilliant along with the mega dryads. Thanks! I always appreciate your feedback. I have already played some games with it. first was a draw . Second vs Doc ....I won! He played Kairos , heralds, horde of nurgle plaguebearers unit of fiends of slaanesh ,2 x chariots of slaanesh , screamers It was a super fun game. Dryads performed very well even if in the end my beautiful unit was destroyed.:-( Anyway, this costed the opponent a lot of losses and I could finish the bearers unit with a multiple charge ( glade riders and 2 treemen ) The treekins and other treemen were dealing with (and destroying) chariots , screamers and fiends ( but this was a long difficult battle to win ) I hope I will play this army soon .It 's a lot of fun:-)
