I ignore that amendment in the BRB FAQ. Definitely 25% Lords & Heroes for me, unless I'm playing an End Times scenario.
This. it makes for better games.
we give leeway when somebody starts up a new army as the 50% lets one reach full size games earlier, i.e. with less painting. But the gentlemen agreement among us here is to always strive for 25% and eventually get there.
If you want to field particularly badass characters, play a bigger game.
edit: but since you mention 'competitive', I guess you'd want to look at the fine print of the events you are aiming for? I believe there is a bit of a mix. If the event pack doesn't mention the percentages, the official rule is 50% from the last FAQ as Fidelis mentioned.
I don't mind one way or another. With the exception of perhaps Nagash himself, I don't think taking 50% Lords makes your army better. You need troops in WFB. The more point you spend on characters, the less you can spend on units of troops.
Besides Nagash, what would you be afraid of facing exactly?
Quite frankly I don't see a problem for most armies if every category except core was set to 50% maximum:
You can't really overspend on Rare a lot what with the 2 dupes maximum. 25% usually just means that in a competitive setting you can't take both the fun rare stuff and the stuff that barely makes your army viable vs the top lists.
There are some powerful heroes and lords but most armies run out of hard to kill combos quite soon, wrapping 50-75% of your points into about 9 wounds worth of models has its glaring weaknesses. I suppose you could field 1250 points of night goblin war/bigbosses with great weapons.... And now that I've thought of it I don't see why not.
We tend to play 50% at the club but most folk aren’t hyper competitive so it’s not a biggie. Just allows some other options. Most of the tournaments in the Uk use 25% (I think the main exception is Cardiff)
25% is the way the edition was designed to be played and the way I prefer. The 50% increase was a marketing ploy to sell overpriced end times models. However it's your game, regardless of what is printed in the book or in an FAQ written by the sales team, it comes down to what you and your fellow players want. You can have 10% or 75%, no way is wrong as long as the players agree.
I believe the game was designed to be run a 25% Lords/Heroes. And yes I believe 50% was an end times fad and really, does the game benefit from 50% Lords/Heroes?? Only if you're running End times characters (which you kinda HAVE to) OR if, for example, you're self comping your army selevtion (mono deamon lists I'm looking at you)
Otherwise I of the same opinion as 1plussave, what youre spending on some (magic/cannon target) super lord, you arent spending on rank and file, which as we know is what wins games.

25% Lords and Heroes definitely. We don't believe in the destruction of the Old World story that the End Times tried to pander, why should we give it any other means of support by allowing its 50% Lords and Heroes mechanic purposefully designed to break the game so folk wouldn't want to play it anymore?
Personally I see the 25/25 % split as very stupid, it sometimes forces you to spend more points on characters than you would want to. EG I wanted both a BSB & a lowlevel mage in a 1500 points game, but due to the bsb costing over 200 points, I only had about 150 points to spend on a wizard, which was too few points, I was forced to buy a cheap sorcerer lord instead!
I would rather see a straight up 50% may be spent on characters, half of that may be spent on lords, that way if I like a few more heroes instead of a single lord, it would actually work!
