So what house rules do you use & why? I generally don't use anything for every game, tho sometimes we reduce the D6+4 scenery pieces based on mutual agreement

My group has a gentleman's agreement to only sparing use mega powerful named characters. Facing down Grimgor Ironhide (or Archaon or Karl Franz, etc.) every once in a while can be fun. Buy having to deal with such a powerful single model every time gets old fast.
I've known 40K players who use their faction's uber character every game. I stopped accepting game requests from them because it wasn't fun playing them even when I would win.

It has always been frowned, more or less, upon in my groups too. Though I don´t mind the ones that obviously adds character or helps setting the tone for something without too many unique and Uber special rules. Like sergeant Naaman perhpas, from the Storm of Vengeance in 2nd Ed 40k.. Maybe not the best example.. But when you have stuff like Kyrl Grimblood from 2nd Ed Space Wolves that had Strategy rating 6, meaning everyone else had to always set up first and you had a higher chance of getting the first turn for no drawback other than a couple points... Nah.. I played Space Wolves but never used him though if I had been smart, I should have..
There needs to be proper cons on top of the pros for special characters, in my humble opinion.. So that house rule is pretty clever..
To use stuff like Grimgor for some campaign might be fun. But to be honest, much rather name my own and playa bit and give them history. And I don´t need the crutch many of them gives you..
In 6th Ed we usually let units march in most terrain, otherwise it was almost pointliess having some terrain features. I guess formations should avoid forests, you don´t enter it i combat formation.. But for playability we did let units march in such terrain. But it depends on how you make the battlefield I guess.. If it is needed.

Our general house rule is no garrisoning buildings.. because the rules suck. Much too hard to displace units

Randomising template hits on ridden monsters between rider and mount - because that is how it should be.

As per the post above...
And also, we use buildings, hills and impassable terrain as though they are "infinitely tall, for Line of sight purposes". Essentially so people can hide stuff behind them. And that something on a hill can pretty much always be seen.

You can hit the rank and file models behind any characters. I hate the fact that you can jimmy the combat math by hiding your units behind characters.

Here's a block dump of some of the rules we use...
• One model in a unit may benefit from a look out sir roll against the following spells: The Dwellers Below, Final Transmutation & The Dreaded 13th. • True Line of Sight (LoS) is used - Except for hills and Impassable Terrain which are considered infinitely high, therefore block LoS. This means you can shoot at a unit on the hill, it is for LoS/Blocking purpose s only. i.e., Is the unit even partially on the hill? It can be seen. Is the unit behind the hill? It cannot be seen. • No more than 12 power dice can be used in a single magic phase. Magic Mushroom dice is not considered a power dice. Warpstone Tokens are considered Power dice. • Beastmen units gain and follow the rules for Marks of Chaos (as per Warriors of Chaos). These marks are free. Units of Chaos Hounds, Harpies and Razorgor Herds cannot gain Marks. • All armies use the rules and points for Common magic items as per the BRB. • Bretonnian Damsels/Prophetesses can all use The lores of Beasts, Life, Heavens and Light. • All Bretonnian Knights (Including Louen and The Green Knight) gain Devastating Charge. • Friendly Tomb Kings units can March if within 12” of the Army General. • The Lore Attribute for the Lore of Nehekhara is changed to the following: “Restless Dead - Each time a wizard successfully casts a spell from the Lore of Nehekhara, the target(s) immediately recover D3+1 Wounds worth of models, as described on pg.28. One Wounded character may recover one of these wounds. Units with Animated Construct can recover 1 wound per successful spell cast. If the spell is successfully cast at an enemy, choose a friendly Undead unit within 12” of the caster instead to recover wounds." • Open ground does count as for the purposes of the Curse of Anraheir spell. • Birona's Timewarp cannot increase a unit’s movement value above 10, so max march would be 20 inches. • The wizard who miscast cannot get a Look out Sir! from damage from a miscast template. • Cannon balls cannot bounce through impassable terrain or buildings. The cannon ball will however inflict hits on any unit garrisoning a building as normal. • Cannons mounted on chariots, such as the Ironblaster, Skullcannon and steam tank may not pivot in the shooting phase and like all other cannons must shoot in a straight line forward from the barrel. • Cannons and Template weapons/spells hit Ridden monsters/chariots randomly. • A model in a challenge cannot be affected by any enemy breath weapons or impact hits done by models from outside the challenge. • A Character model may make way at the start of any round of close combat. • Ironcurse Icon works against all Weapons that fire like a War Machine. • Immunity to Killing Blow also gives immunity to Heroic Killing Blow. • A model with Always Strike First and with equal or higher initiative than an enemy model with Always Strike First and Always Strike Last will get to re-roll to hit rolls in close combat against that model. • If the general character model is killed but his mount survives you still receive the +100vp for killing the general, although you do not receive the victory points for the cost of that model. • If 2 characters have incompatible base sizes to the unit they are joining then they are placed on either side of the unit. A 3rd character with an incompatible base size may not join the unit. • All mounts, except ridden monsters, are ignored for leadership purposes for the Spell Treason of Tzeentch. In the case of chariots the creatures pulling the chariot and the chariot’s leadership are ignored. • The Tally of Pestilence has no affect while Epidemius is held in reserve. • Hits from the Reign of Chaos are always treated as having hit the front arc of the targeted unit. • Only 1 character may charge out of a unit per phase. • The Battle Standard Bearer may take mundane items available to normal heroes of their type. • The -1S from the Blizzard Aura special rule for Frostheart Phoenixes does not stack. • the High Magic Lore Attribute increases all Ward Saves as well as all conditional Ward Saves a model may have. If a model only has conditional Ward Saves then it also receives a 6+ Ward Save. • The army list does not need to state any Lores for Alarielle. She chooses her Lore(s) at the start of each game as per her special rules. • The army list must state if Teclis is using High Magic or Battle Magic. If you are choosing Battle Magic, then Teclis may pick his spells at the start of every game. • Models with the Predatory Fighter rule may benefit from it when fighting from the second or subsequent ranks. • Piranha Blade only gives Multiple Wounds (D3) Special Rule while being used in close combat. • Burning Alignment and The Deliverance of Itza target all enemy units within the specified distance of the spells. This applies even if the enemy unit is engaged in close combat or in the rear/flank arc of the model casting the spell. • Tiktaq'To may join units of Terradon Riders. • Daemonic characters with more than 1 magic weapon can only benefit from the effects of 1 weapon at a time. They must declare at the start of the player turn which weapon the character is using; any other magic weapons have no effect whatsoever for the duration of that turn. • The Cauldron of Blood does not allow re-rolls on ranged attacks or spells. • The army list does not need to state any Lores for Morathi. She chooses her Lore(s) at the start of each game as per her special rules. • A model with Hatred (High Elves) has Hatred against all models taken from the High Elf Army Book. Same for Dwarfs, Dark Elves etc... • A shot from a doom diver war machine may never hit more than a single unit; if two units are struck by a doom diver marker the controlling player decides which one, they hit. (This is to avoid issues with the size of the marker etc). • The Skaven Spell Cracks Call may be cast into combat and through friendly units as it does not have a target. • Other Skaven Spells may not be cast into combat unless they specifically say so or mention it in their description. • A charging Skaven unit that has moved forward d6 inches as a result of a Screaming Bell allows no charge reactions. • The army list does not need to state any Lores for a Skaven Grey Seer or Verminlord as they can freely mix Spells of Plague and Ruin as per their special rules. • A Hellpit Abomination that has had its strength reduced or increased will use the new strength when working out any of its special attacks. • When making their special movement attack, Hexwraith models measure distance moved from starting point to enemy unit they are attacking and back to a legal position. The distance moved cannot exceed their movement value or double this if they marched. They may reform inside an enemy unit. • Death Shriek and Ghostly Howl are not considered shooting attacks. • Wood Elves armies may duplicate their enchanted across more than one unit. • If you chose to mount the sisters of Twilight on Gwindalor, then treat them as a 4 Wound Monstrous Cavalry unit (gaining full wounds as per their rules). • Soul Feeder may NOT be used to gain wounds back from both Stomps and Breath weapon attacks.

Another thing we do, when a unit successfully charges, we slide the charger or target unit to maximize engauged models regardless of if the charger had enough remaining movement to reach that position. Clipping is not a valid tatitic. It is an unfortunate limitation of the rules and the physical models. You can hit the rank and file models behind any characters. I hate the fact that you can jimmy the combat math by hiding your units behind characters. That is a good one. We have used it since 4th/5th edition. So I don't even think of it as a house rule.

Randomising template hits on ridden monsters between rider and mount - because that is how it should be. It's not like you to go against RAW fvon! Not really. A rules discussion is about what the actual rules are, whether you like them or not. I have always pointed out that, as long as the players agree, they obviously can deviate from the actual rules. Indeed, that is the whole point of a "house rule." But I will never fault someone for wanting to play by the rules as they are.

+1 on infinitely high hills,no character walls and randomizing template hits on ridden monsters.
The most controversial house rule we have is double 1 on casting is a miscast and overrules double six. The Earthing Rod has become quite popular around here. Also double 1 on dispel is auto-fail. Six dicing for the win happens a lot less now, just not worth the risk unless one is really desperate.
