Hey guys new to the forum,
My question is in regards to combat res and steadfast. So to some up i have charge with 2 ranks of blackguard into a unit of skinks and kroxigors (10 wide frontage of skinks) i wiped out 17 skinks which left 8 skinks in front rank and 3 kroxigors in back rank.
i ended up winning combat by 10 or 11 cant remember exactly. Now steadfast needs to be min 5 for a 2nd rank my understanding and with kroxigors they are meant to move up to front rank if there is space.
My argument is during this my friend said due to them being on an ogre size base they cant move up but my argument was that the rule for being in rank of skinks is they take up the same footprint as a skink (states it in lizardman rulebook) so one should have moved up and he would have then lost the rank so wouldn't be steadfast and would have to break test.
Lets say this caused a pretty big argument as rules have been in the past left to interpretation and changed the game completely.
Any clarification on this would be great.

Lets say this caused a pretty big argument as rules have been in the past left to interpretation and changed the game completely. Any clarification on this would be great. Edited my prior post which was actually incorrect. In this instance it's not an easy answer as the different base sized unique unit technicalities of Skink/Kroxigor come into it. Lizardmen are steadfast. Black guard have 2 full ranks. For Steadfast to take place the defeated unit needs MORE ranks than the opposition which is the case here. Only due to the unique Lizarmen rules (attached). In your example the Lizardmen have 3 ranks (3 vs 2). Skink/Kroxigor unit needs to take a breaktest on its leadership but unmodified by the combat loss. Per Lizardmen unique rules it's the skink footprint count as which counts for ranks so the 3 kroxigor in 2nd rank provide 2 ranks (3 wide kroxigor equals 6 wide skinks). Your opponent is right in that the Kroxigor stay in the 2nd rank. Due to the unique rules which state they are placed/reformed into the second rank and only move to the front rank IF the front rank width is reduced to less than the 2nd rank. Hope this helps. Interesting rules query for a unique unit. Originally I thought you had it right until I double checked my Lizardmen book.

The unit would be steadfast.
Spawn-Kin units (Combined Skink/Krox units) calculate their ranks as if the entire foot print is made up of skinks. Kroxigor only go into the front rank if the width of the first rank is smaller than the second rank. In this particular example, the 3 Krox in the back are only 6 skinks wide, and none of them would move to the front. Since the 3 Krox effectively count as two ranks of 6 Skinks, the cohort would have 3 ranks, and thus be steadfast, according to the rules.
I don't know why the lizardman player would have deployed skinks 10 wide anyway, but in this particular case, they would be correct, according to the Lizardmen rulebook. Did the skinks and Krox not kill a single Black guard? Or were there still 2 ranks of Black Guard after the combat?

I believe this also sadly means that the Kroxigor may never fight in more than one rank, as the "Footprint of the Skinks" rule wording means when looking for the third rank there's going to be the ass-end of a Krox there.
