Hi all, I have a battle-of-skull-pass style gold & blue army that I'm adding a unit of longbeards with shields to. I don't want to cop-out and paint them all in silver, as they'll look the same as my ironbreakers, and kinda like the idea of the armour taking on a blue effect. Took a look on the net & I really like the look of this type of thing below. Does anyone have any idea how this kind of effect is achieved? To my view, it looks something like a white undercoat with a speedcoat style dipping ink over, but I've never used anything like that before... any guidance from those experienced painters out there would be gratefully received!

I would look up NMM (non metallic metal) and then just use blue/greys instead of pure grey/white/black

Howdy, this appears to be NMM. So it’s all blue-ish grey’s highlighted up to white probably. You can get a nice blue hue to your armor colors if you do a thinned blue wash at the end.

Perhaps a look into Picasso's Blue Period could help...

Yeah, that's definitely a blue-hue NMM. Looks great, but will be a LOT of work for a unit.
A simpler method would be to do standard steel/silver, and then use a blue ink glaze to impart the color. I did that a lot with my Dark Elves. Best part is it works for any color you like, not just blue. I'll even do a passable gold, bronze, or copper with the right yellowish-brown inks.

Thanks all- as I'm going to be doing around 40 models like this, I'm going to use your suggestion vulcan. I've ordered two 'dipping inks' from Green Stuff World- Dusty blue & Indigo blue. These are very similar to Citadel contrast paints.
I'm then going to try a variety of different tequniques to try and find a suitable effect. Unfortunately I'm just not confident enough - nor have the time - to complete a model, let alone a unit using the NMM!
I'll post some pictures of my efforts

You might want to experiment with thinning the inks as well, the sample picture doesn't feature all that saturated a blue.

What I'm thinking is maybe trying these two: Undercoat spray (will try black and white) 1) Ink directly onto the white 2) Paint silver onto the black then ink over the silver So 4 options using the 2 different ink colours. I dont want to deviate too far from the blue/gold effect from battle of skull pass, which is how I've framed my army

Hi all, So I wanted to share the results of my experimentation, and overall I'm really happy with them! I tried the ink directly onto white undercoat, and while the effect was quite good, for heavily-armoured dwarfs it didn't quite have the armoured feel I wanted, so here's what I ended up with: Undercoat spray chaos black Paint over with silver Wash over with ink (I tried both, hence the slight difference in hue between them in the pics) Then a drybrush over with silver again, to really give them that armour feel, because the ink wash on its own does make them look a little too dull... Overall I'm chuffed with the results

Good result, the blueish shine of the armor is nice.

So I've finished off 17 of these now & I'm chuffed with the effect. Don't get me wrong, they're not anywhere near the level of the NMM image up the top, but as rank & file troops on a battlefield, I think they'll really 'pop'. I'm aiming to have a full unit of 40 available so I can have a good-sized horde if I so desire! In terms of time, they've taken me longer than I originally anticipated as once I've washed them, they really need the drybrush over them again to give them the 'armour' metallic shine. I did a batch of 10 recently, including the champion, and I reckon they took around 8 hours all-in including bases
