I have all my warmachines on round bases. As warmachines don't have front/flank/rear there is no necessity to put them on a square/rectangular base.
In my experience putting warmachines on square/rectangular bases only opens up for unnecessary questions which some opponents will try to exploit. Like "the target is not in the front arc of the cannon", or "my chargers close the gap (and with that the overrun direction)", or "I get +1 to combat res for flank - no, you're in combat with a warmachine, it doesn't have a defined flank/rear - but you put it on a base, so now it has a flank" etc.
By using round/rectangular bases for warmachines you prevent all those and similar questions while still having the advantage of clear range measurements and clarity if a warmachine is hit or not by a template.

That's an interesting point, though what's your view on the Plagueclaw and Warp Lightning Cannon, both of which were given Chariot bases by GW when the plastic kit came out for them?

True, those two indeed have rectangular bases supplied with then and are afaik the only warmachines supplied with bases, but does that change the statement above? If you stick the Plagueclaw or Lightning Cannon on oval bases, would it change gameplay?

It just occurred to me the Skaven riding things/mounts are missing in the opening post.
All 3 options from the armybook are on 40x40mm. Personally I've put the Broodhorror from Monstrous Arcanum on a 50x100mm base, but maybe it should have been 60x100mm?

I am working on a Night Goblin army. What size base should I use for a Dankhold troggoth ( Troll).

The Dankhold Troggoth is bigger than the normal Trolls, though, as reflected in their AoS base size: normal Trolls come with a 50mm round base, while the Troggoth has a 60mm round base.

They require a bit of foresight, but are slim enough for 40mm ☺️

Warriors of Chaos has a Taurus and Lammasu on chariot bases in that list?
They've never been on anything other than 50 x 50mm. Also under Chaos Dwarfs they are 50 × 50mm.
Just curious as to where the 50 x 100mm came from?
