I think it's safe to say it's more balanced than any version of Warhammer has ever been. The amount of playtesting done from the first provisional army lists up to 1.0 is insane. Balance will never be perfect but if there is one thing T9A does well, it's balance. It has certainly been very interesting to be part of such a huge development project.
I still don't like that we even have a Background team creating a new world, though. And we don't have SoM, T&T or any of the other stuff that made 8th great. But maybe now that we have a solid 1.0 version of the rules we can get started on things like that.

the part that irks me a bit (just from skimming the rules) is this quest for balance above all else. The typical claim on the internet is 'a perfectly balanced game is the best for all players'. And, I don't think that is true. For example they kicked out animosity because apparently it is hard to balance the orc army with that rule. Well, that takes away a lot of character from that army that I as a 'non-tournament' player enjoyed playing against. And, the army books in 8th were even enough for our local gaming.
I'd still play it though if it were the only game in town, seems like a decent rule set. But, at the moment there are still enough people around here keeping 8th going so no need.

Yeah, the balance>flavor debate is pretty big in the 9th age forum. Certainly alot of Bretonnian players trying to write the new Equitaine rules have left due to the infantry=cavalry in power ideal. Cavalry got it pretty bad as they're trying to match opponents in equal power that have access to spears and numbers, flanking alone is not going to help that.
Anyway, the talks about future streamlined rules and more balance makes me feel 9th is walking to close to the KoW path. A generic fantasy world with little history behind it doesn't help that image.

In reality KoW has a much better world history working at the moment. The main rulebook has a decent story working, including some epic moments. It's no WFB, but let's not forget that WFB has been around for 30+ years in some form and has had their history developed an innumerable number of times including more novels than some major imprints out there.

Just looking over at ninth age, and they appear more fractious than some people believe. Also, I question the balance issue more when I heat arguments about the old force org.rules (min/max number of units and so forth) being better than 8th. Hopefully ninth age doesn't turn in this direction (it did not appear to be)
