I played my final group game the other week so thought I’d do a quick recap. The first thing I’ll confirm is I didn’t play any friendlies (as I previously stated I wouldn’t). This made some of the games quite challenging, especially when a number of the opposing players had multitudes of skills. I’ll post a few pics up when I get back from my hols.
Game 1 vs The Stirling Strikers (Si’s Humans).
Si was a relatively new player but wowed the fans with his dirty play and insistence in laying in the boot at almost every opportunity. He absolutely brutalised my team with 6 of them in the casualties box at the end of the game. This came as a complete shock to a team that was runner up in the casualties competition last season. His commitment to this side of the game came at the expense of his team doing anything else meaningful and the Norse scored a comfortable win. Off the back of this victory, I was able to purchase a new Berserker to bolster the team.
Final score 3-0 to the Norse
Game 2 vs The Barak Vaar Bruins (Commissioner Chris’s Dwarves)
Out of the group, this was the game I was the most wary of. Like the Norse, the dwarves have a team that also almost universally has block, negating the one advantage that my team normally have. His naturally high armour in conjunction with a number of his players having guard (from the friendlies played) also helped to negate the few higher strength players on the team. Thankfully he had suffered a few deaths in his games so he didn’t have much of a numeric advantage. The game was quite cagey (literally, it is the dwarves main tactic after all) with the Norse suffering an early death. Thankfully the new Berserker, having something to prove to the rest of the team, was on fire knocking out dwarves left and right, getting a casualty and also scoring. The underhanded dwarves even sneaked on one of their special balls during the second half but it failed to make an impact. The Norse victory left a thoroughly demoralised Dwarf team at the end as they realised they had been knocked out of the competition.
Final score 2-0 to the Norse
Game 3 vs Amazon’s Prime (Tim’s Amazons)
Out of the group, this was the game I was most looking forward to. Not because it would be block vs dodge but because I’d never faced the Amazon team before (and he was using the very nice Black Scorpion miniatures team). It proved to be a very tough game as again my opponent had a number of friendlies under his belt so a number of his team had the dreaded ‘blodge’ (block/dodge combo), which made them difficult to take down, even with them rocking the same AV of 7 (which is pitiful in game terms) that my team had. It didn’t help that again, a number of his team had the guard skill.
The torrential tropical rain that fell for the entire game, ensured that ball skills were less than impressive and resulted in a game that swung both ways with turnovers a plenty. After the Amazonians took an early lead, the wiley ladies used their seductive charms against the Norse coach and he ended up setting up first, even though the team was due to receive the ball having just gone down 0-1 (ok it was a mid week game and we were both knackered and this characterised a number of stupid mistakes we both made, there was nothing underhanded in it). Thankfully the Norse were fired up and by turn 7 of the first half, the Norse thrower Bjorn was set to score when he stopped to tie a shoelace. This conveniently gave the rest of the team a chance to capitalise on their numeric advantage, showing the Amazonians just how they bestow their ‘affection’ on the ladies by commercing operation battery. Things didn’t go all their own way and one of their number was also carted off the field. Just before the half time whistle they ran in an equaliser.
The second half was an anticlimax with plenty of action and turnovers. It made me appreciate just how slippery those gals are and only some desperate action prevented Tim scoring the winning touchdown.
Final score 1-1
So with all my games finished I ended up top of the group with 7 points. Tim and Si both had 4 points each and the same number of touchdowns for and against so it went down to casualties caused. This meant Si got the group runner up spot, as with 13 casualties caused, he currently heads the league for most violent team (though not all games are complete as yet).
Tim did offer Si a game as a play off and Si’s response (on top of his commitment to violence) earnt him my totally made up coach’s choice award for the season. He said: the head coach would consider it if you made a small donation to the Sterling Imperial Veterans Infirmary, e.g you pay me 30k gold and you get to roll a D6. On a 6 we will have a play off game.
We are still awaiting the response and outcome...
As for my opponent in the quarter finals, the 3rd group runner up spot is still wide open with any one of 3 players able to qualify so it could be Dwarf, Orc or Nurgle (with the Nurgle team having a 1 point advantage at present). It’s worth mentioning that last years league winner, Edwin, currently tops the group with his Vampire team and even if he loses his final game, will hold onto that spot.
