Hey guys! Sorry I've been a little busy and haven't posted updates of progress from last month. Sadly, I wasn't able to finish my JAN target, so I'm resubmitting them for FEB instead.. 1. 3 Minotaurs 2. Grail Chapel 3. Gors (a rank maybe, hopefully two) This is where I am at the start of this month (well, 8 days in...) Minos: Grail Chapel: Cheers everyone! -David Great stuff, your paint jobs look very clean. Good to see some Minotaurs in the Challenge. Chapel looks awesome, I'd love to own that bit of scenery one day.

No kidding, GMW! That Grail Chapel is an awesome piece of terrain and I've wanted one for a long time! Every purchase of mine (back when it was new and in main production) was a debate between that Chapel and something else. Evidently, the something else always won out for whatever reason. I'm still supremely jealous! Looks like a great start Saulot! Excellent work on the base of it!

Chariots look amazing, I love the look of them. Really happy with how they look, I think they turned out really well.
I'm going to hopefully finish wrapping/packing stuff over this weekend and Monday to send to you next week Mottdon.

Thanks for the comment GMW! I have some ideas to make the chapel a little less Empire, and more Bretonnian. Excited to see if it works. Mottdon, I love your TK Chariots! Green has always suited them for some reason.. GMW is lucky to get them! haha

So I continue on my spring snow DE army. Feedback on snow/base is very welcome. The blue one to the right was painted by previous owner so only redid the base. The green one I did but it was poorly assembled and to be honest I really don't like the model 😊 So I focused a lot on the base instead and picked up some flower turfs.

So I started with one of my favorite unit in Warhammer cold one knight. Before I do the full unit, I would love some critique so what do better.

looks really good already. I would suggest highlighting the scales some more. There are two options, the easy way is just dry-brushing with a brighter green, they other option is actually painting some of the scales a lighter green to make it a bit uneven. or you can do both.
the other part that looks a little flat is the reigns. add a careful edge highlight with a lighter brown. or consider using a lighter brown which you can then wash with Agrax Earthshade to good effect.
mind you this guy is fine as is. depends on how much time you want to invest...and how big the unit is going to be.

strutsagget, I love how detailed your bases are. It suits the DE perfectly well, I think. And as Naitsabes mentioned, a quick highlight on the scales and reigns would make the model pop. They're one unit that really takes drybrushing extremely well because of all the details in the sculpt..

Thx Saulot and Naitsabes. I have two layers of dry brush on the scales but as you said when I shaded it down to make the cracks darker it is needed to make em pop again. Thx for the kind words and feedback 😊

I realize that I might be getting to this a tad late, but there are a couple of things I think you could do. Mind, I think that this Cold One is table top quality as is. More than playable. But if you want to do a bit more detail, then I'd focus on your drybrushing. Like was suggested above, I think drybrushing would go a long way. I like it more than highlighting, because it is a more subtle blending of colors, whereas a highlight is a bold line along the edges. True, highlighting make the model have a sudden impact and pop on a table top, and is a quick and easy method to employ, but it doesn't look as "natural" to me. Taking this a step further would be using wet blending, which is a technique the pros use, as well as an airbrush to get your "big picture" elements. I'm JUST getting into these and will hopefully have some good stuff coming soon. When I first read your post about the Cold One, I immediately thought "Drybrush!", though, I was thinking that I'd drybrush the skin portions a lighter color, rather than the scales. (I just think that the skin beneath the scales would be a lighter tone. Don't really know why.) That's all personal preference though. I can see where you already have drybrushed, but the greens are so close in tone, that they don't show up very much on one another. Don't be afraid to mix your paints and try some stuff out. In this case, I might try making a 50/50 mix of your green of choice an a Beige like Baneblade Brown (Citadel paint) to try and bridge the gap between the green scales and skin and the brown spiky bits. Seconly, as far as the reigns go, a simple drybrush of "a light brown such as XV-88 can really make it look like weathered leather. Looks great, just apply it rather conservatively, building up to the point you like. As far as the bases for the Hydras go, I think they look good! They make the model look complete and tell a story. That's really what you want from a base, not a sense of "balance" or "too many flowers on this corner", etc. I can tell that this guy is going on a rampage pretty early on in the spring and it immediately makes me wonder, "Why? What's this guy's issue?" I call that successful. P.S. - I like this Hydra version WAAAAAY more than the latest version. It looks much more menacing to me than the new, carnivorous plant verion!

mottdon thx! Regarding the hydras, it's not so much the overall feeling as the fine cast... It's tough to spot anything, and when you do, they are more or less crappy to paint. Feels like you need to be DaVinci or a freehand expert to do anything else then dry brush.

They are very "wrinkly" models! I think that its the heads that I like so much about the older models. The size of the new ones is better though. The old War Hydra looks like a little brother next to the newer Kharbdyss models! Lol!

So I picked up some more details. 2 more layers of green dry brushed scales, mouth, eyes, leather straps edges, steel edges. Should I go even brighter with the green on scales? Should I do something with the naked skin? Really hard when there is no good position for airbrush :/ what happens with dark, dry brush on skin, never done that only highlight
