I'm not sure if this is the right place for this thread, but, whatever, I'm putting it here. I just posted in the miniwargaming thread about making starter armies to teach our friends how to play, so I thought I'd start a thread here and see if we can't build 500-1000 point armies that teach most of the rules without getting bogged down into the craziness that can accompany 2500 point games. I'm thinking armies that highlight the strengths of each army, while still teaching the basics of how to play each phase of the game. So each list would have a shooting unit, a good fighty unit, and a level 1 wizard. Maybe some cavalry, but not fast cavalry. Not because fast cav isn't important to the game, but because it introduces a lot of exceptions to the normal rules that can clutter a new player's brain.
So, for instance, an Empire army might have a level 1 beast wizard, a unit of halberdiers, a unit of crossbowmen, a unit of knights, and a captain with a single magic item. I'm not sure exactly how many points that is, but you get the magics, the horsies, the shooty, and the stabby. Maybe also, just use the signature spells for each lore for the first few games to simplify things.
I have to get ready for work right now, so I don't really have time to put a full-on list together, but I'll probably put something together later today or tomorrow (I've got D&D after work tonight) and post it. But let me see what you've got. Let's see if we can't grow the game.

A sample 500 pt Empire list could be:
Battle Wizard (Dispel Scroll) {Lore of Fire} - 90 [Lore of Fire here is great in these small games since tossing a Fireball into a small unit can have serious impact! Plus, who doesn't like throwing Fireballs?] Captain (BSB, Full Plate Armor, Enchanted Shield) - 96 10 Crossbowmen - 90 19 Halberdiers (Musician) - 124 5 Pistoliers (Musician) - 100
Total:500

At 1000 pts:
Warrior Priest (White Cloak of Ulric, Heavy Armor, Great Weapon) - 121 Battle Wizard (Lv2, Dispel Scroll) - 125 {Lore of Fire} Captain (BSB, Full Plate Armor, Talisman of Preservation, Enchanted Shield) - 141
22 Halberdiers (Standard, Musician) - 152 10 Crossbowmen - 90 10 Archers - 70
Cannon - 120 5 Pistoliers - 90 5 Pistoliers - 90
Total: 1000 pts

Fireball was made for small-scale armies.

Definitely. Although, the max boosted Fireball is one of the most powerful magic missiles in the game!

It's the whole 'for each fireball there is a chance that your soul will go to the realm of chaos' thing that holds me back from becoming a wizard.

Too much studying and training for me. Considered it then ultimately decided that I'm a more "hands on" type of individual and if I were to mix that with magic things would have ended up being disastrous EDIT: I suppose there's always Tzeentch...

In my case, it was that I wasn't gifted enough for a scholarship and my parents not wealthy enough to pay for the whole education. I still dream of a higher scholar of wizardry. But I guess I would just have been sucked into the warp anyway :/

Ugh. I'm at the opposite end. After 12 years of College, I've had more than enough studying. No thank you please! Time to play with my Fireballs!

Here's a list I worked up for the Dark Elves (it was the easiest book to get to since all my stuff is packed up for moving). They're a tough army to build for at 500 points, so I went 750.
Sorceress, level 1 Dark Magic 80 Dark Shards x10 120 Corsairs x15, FC 165 Bleakswords x20, FC 210 Cold One Knights x5 Mus. & Standard 170
Army Total 745
It's got magic, shooting, cavalry, and close combat. Now I really want to get the thing put together and painted so I can start teaching people to play. Alas, I have to wait a few weeks until I get into my new house. Keep the army lists coming, though.

That Dark Elves list looks good. I think you could cut it down to 500 by removing the Bleakswords, and cutting down (but upgrading) the Corsairs:
Sorceress, level 1 Dark Magic - 80
Dark Shards x10 - 120
Corsairs x10, AHW, Mus. & Champ - 130
Cold One Knights x5 Mus. & Champ - 170
Army Total - 500
You have to build the Corsairs with one of the upgrades, so it's best to include one as part of the army, plus the additional hand weapons pack a bit more punch - in a 500 point game they're an offensive unit capable of holding its own in combat against the low-level infantry they're likely to face. I put champions in over standards, as challenges are fun and potentially quite useful in games this size.

I like that list, sedge.
I actually lost the list I had made while moving, and haven't had a chance to hop on here for, obviously, quite some time, so I just made new ones. I have lists for all 13 of the army books I own. I need to make some purchases to actually build them all (especially beastmen and ogres), but that's my next project. I might actually make this thread a plog for them.

I can see what you want to do and to make it balanced its extremely difficult.
Firstly I would avoid duplicate choices, after all you're introducing different units to the player.
Second, don't go too big. 20-25 models in an infantry unit is more than enough.
Army balance is critical at such low points. 500 pts of Tomb Kings would be rubbish! In fact I'd suggest keeping to more human types that have very few special rules.
Without doing the maths but a 500pt Empire army (three units) of Knights, hand gunners and a cannon led by a wizard I think would be able to take out most other armies as they'll not have the tools to handle them.
Best of luck
Greg

Well, if you're going for more of a 500 pt army range, then for Empire I'd suggesst:
Warrior Priest(Heavy Armor, Shield, Dragonhelm) - 79 20 Halberdiers - 120 5 Knights (Musician) - 120 1 Mortar - 100 10 Huntsmen - 80
Total: 499 pts
That'll give you a strong infantry block, a 1+ armor unit, a good general who can cast prayers (your magic phase) with a decent 3+ armor save as well as a 2++ ward vs flaming attacks, a war machine (Mortars are pretty effective at low point games like this), a shooting unit, and scouts who can put pressure on your enemy early. That's rather well balanced at this point level with a bit of everything.
