This will be the project log for The Fell Legion, the combined chaos force that Lord Mortkin led against the city of Volganof. Naitsabes and I are working on recreating the Slaughter at Volganof, the giant game with the fold-out pages at the back of the 8th edition BRB. This army is split into 6 forces: 1) The Black Reavers 2) The Daemonhost 3) The Barbarian Hordes 4) The Warherd 5) The Plague Army 6) Rogue Characters and Formations Now, all of these will eventually have full army lists posted here, but for now I'm going to get on with the update with a miniature from category 6: This is Grogg, the mighty two-headed giant from the chaos wastes. He's a bit better than a normal giant with bonus wounds and a stone thrower attack. I converted this model almost 3 years ago and started painting it about a year and a half ago, then it sat, untouched, into yesterday when I decided it was time to finish. This model really grew on me as I painted it and I'm quite pleased with the final result. Let me know what you all think and be ready for relatively frequent updates. Kaltheras

Grogg languished for too long. Great to see him finished. Stellar painting and converting. I expected no less and you delivered. Maybe he will get to taste some cannonballs in a 'warm up for Volganof' game some time soon.

Excellent two headed giant. It could easily pass as a Cursed Ettin if you wished. I see you use custom rules which is cool.

Naitsabes Yeah, he has indeed been a long time coming. Glad you like him and yes, we should get a warm up game with him and some bestial allies. strutsagget Thanks, there will be plenty more incoming. For now I'll just be updating with models as I do them, but as I finish each force I'll pay l post photos of each whole army. grandmasterwang Yeah, I am a fan of custom rules and scenarios (though it's sometimes tough to find opponents who agree). And yes, I will almost certainly try out the Cursed Ettin rules with him at some point, as they seem super sweet. Now I'll get on to the update itself. Here we have a few models from force 3, The Barbarian Hordes: Now these models are obviously painted very, very simply. This is because I'm painting them to bulk up one of the earliest units I painted for my chaos army (painted the start of the unit more than 10 years ago now), so I'm trying to match my painting time and quality from that era so the new figures don't stand out. The other reason for the simplicity of the painting is that there are over 100 Marauders on foot in the whole force and I really dislike the models. These are Khorne marked Marauders with flails, the unit that attacks Volganof will be made up of 44 of the guys which will hopefully be enough to both beat Empire infantry units (2 attacks at WS4 S5 do a number on State Troops) and break their steadfast. That's it for me tonight, comments are welcome. Kaltheras

Today's update sees more work done on this same Marauder unit from Force 3: The wash is still drying on these and the bases still need to be done, but they are very close to complete. Father Nurgle gifted me with plague today so while I was off work and had plenty of time to paint, I also didn't have much energy to paint. Still, I got a fair amount done, I expect to finish these tomorrow. Once these Marauders are done I have to decide what to paint next for this project, and I'm thinking it's going to be something very large and scaly. Kaltheras

Great work! You're flying through those guys! I'd love to see them throw down with a unit of Flagellents!
Why don't you join us in the Monthly Painting Challenge? It's just basically a way to keep each other motivated by sharing what we've done month-to-month. I'll be starting a little bi-monthly challenge to the group as well. The current challenge for last month and this month was "Unit Filler", for example. We'd love to have to join us there!

Boy those are some dated sculpts/models. I wish they'd release new ones.
Of course that will probably never happen. Oh well...
Your paint job looks good. Quick and easy is the name of the game for a lot of us here and there's nothing wrong with it! When you have as many models as a lot of us do it's the only way you remotely stand a chance of getting it all done!

mottdon I'll have a look at the monthly painting challenge, not sure that I've got time to paint up a unit filler in the next three days, but you never know. @ryryak They are indeed very dated, thankfully I have new models from AoS for some of them (the Khorne guys and the Kairic Acolytes both make good Marauders). But, I've got a couple hundred of these old sculpts to work through first. And speaking of other new Marauders I would actually not be surprised to see a new box show up in the next year or two in the style of this guy: I can only hope. Anyways, today's update will be short, I've finished the 14 I was working on yesterday: Here they are, and then a picture with the 5 from Monday: So that makes 19 Marauders painted in three days which is really the speed I want with those, I just don't enjoy painting those sculpts. In terms of what's next I plan to do some building and converting over the next couple of days rather than painting, I've got cavalry to build. Kaltheras

Awesome. Looking forward to your progress! I'd say that at this rate, you should have around 12 armies done by year's end!

I like the bloodbound a lot actually. Do they fit well on a 25mm square base?

mottdon Thanks, these troops in particular I'm able to do much faster than usual as I'm only going for barely TTS on them, much of my other progress will be slower. grandmasterwang & ryryak I find the bloodreavers work quite well on 25mm squares, here are 5 of mine that I painted a while ago:

Well, it's been a few days since my last update, not because I haven't been hobbying, but because I've been working on something big. The Battle of Volganof calls for the chaos side to field Skullex, a great fire dragon. GW recommends using the Forge World model for this but I don't have that kind of money, so I bought myself a huge reaper dragon instead: This dragon is really quite huge (though certainly not the biggest on the market), here's a scale shot with a marauder: Now, though I really do like this dragon I was not a huge fan of the pose, it was too hunched, so, reposing time! As you can see this took a fair bit of sculpting, but it was definitely worth it as I find the new pose much more powerful looking. Finally there's the base: I chose to mount him on a 150*150mm base which seemed too big until I put the wings on, then he overhangs every edge of the base. I've used cork, slate, basing sand, bits, and crackle paint (the red in the image, it hasn't dried yet, thus it hasn't cracked yet). I really wanted to create a base with some extra visual interest but which would still be mostly homogeneous with my army. Anyways, that's all for now, hopefully I'll have a chance to start slapping some paint on this Titan over the Easter holiday. Cheers. Kaltheras

Well, I did manage to get some work done over Easter. The base is done (though it's not edged yet), but the dragon itself still has a lot of work to be done. The underparts (belly, undersides of the arms, and back of the legs) are all done in creamy yellow (closer to cream in real life than in the photos), while the banding as well as the paws are done as dark grey/black. These colors have been chosen to accent what will eventually be red/red-orange scales. So, much work to be done, it'll likely take the rest of the week to finish at a minimum but I'll try to keep progress updates here every couple of days. Kaltheras
