He looks fine, still looks like there is some depth there. Such a great model. I haven't used contrast paints yet, but I paint from a black primer and hear it is not good off that?

I don’t have extensive knowledge of them but I’m slowly starting to work out if I can use them for the majority of stuff I’ll be painting. It just makes it quick and easy (though not for everything). From that limited use (I have about 6-8 I’ve tried) I’m positive you could not use it on black at all. I will say you don’t need their ‘contrast’ primers, I’ve just been using the standard GW white primer can for everything.

if you want too prime black and use contrast, you need a very heavy white or off white zenithel coat in between

Lol, I love it! That's just awesome that you had to picture it at an angle just to see his face! Great work, brother!

WIP on my Knights. Following the purple and yellow army scheme, however I have a query. I’m planning on keeping their armour predominantly black (a bit Knights of Morr) but not sure whether to use silver or gold trimming/highlights on the armour? Anyone have any inspiration for me (or advice). Cheers

a rich-yellowy gold would go well with the yellow on the banner. Are you planning on gloss varnish for the armor then? flat black wouldn't quite look right, I think.
google image search for 'knights of the blazing sun' will yield lots of black armor with gold or silver trim for inspiration (just need to find your way past all the video game pics).

Anyone have any inspiration for me (or advice). Cheers Oooh-ho-ho-ho-ho! It has BEGUN!!!! Welcome to your spiral into Empire obsession! You've got a great start there! Silver will contrast much more with the purple, black and yellow than gold will, but if you're going for a Blazing Sun unit, then yeah, gold is the way to go. Personally, I'd stick with Silver since the yellow and gold will mix a bit too much. It can come across looking as though you meant for it to be all gold, but ran out of paint and just used yellow instead. Not to mention, if you try to do any details (gold trim, etc.) it'll get lost on a yellow background. Silver will still be seen if you stand back several feet and look at it. If you're having a hard time deciding, I'd suggest painting two completely, in either scheme and see what you like the most. It won't be hard to just paint over the gold/silver areas on the one you don't choose. Also, stand back and look at them as though you're observing a game. That helps. Whichever you gravitate towards, is the one you'll be happy with in the end. I do this quite often when trying to decide on a scheme. I'll usually know before I'm even finished because it'll just feels wrong, or it becomes too complicated, or I'll see something that just doesn't look right, etc. You get the point. One of the worst things you can do though, is let others TELL YOU how to paint it. Taking suggestions is fine, sometimes people will give you an idea you hadn't considered before, bit let the end result be yours and something you are happy with. (You're the one who has to live with it. Everyone else here is only spending a few moments looking a pictures.) Looking forward to seeing more progress pics!

mottdon, you raise some good points as always fella. I have built a good chunk of Empire core over the last few weeks. Just waiting on the contrast paints to arrive so I can really start on the halberdiers! The Empire Knights are also a lot less daunting than the Bretonnian ones, so in doing these, I can procrastinate a little while longer over that army 😂

This is the scheme I went with in the end. I wasn’t happy with how the black armour was looking (especially contrasted with the yellow and purple) so went for a more classic look. I have finished the first 5 and will post them once based but currently starting on the next batch of 7 so will post pics once they are all done. And yes there may be a slight clue of what else I’m working on in the background.
