Decided to dust off the Tomb Kings for the first time in 6 years, and I'll be facing my mates new Empire army this weekend. He's literally just got it so it'll be a new experience for us both.
This list is really not optimised or anything, it's just all the models I've managed to find and repair so far ( The scorpions and stalkers seem to have entombed themselves beneath the sands permanently during a house move)
Lords: Liche High Priest, level 4, heirophant, lore of nehekhara, talisman of preservation, earthing rod (I really feel he needs to stay alive!)
Heroes: Liche Priest, level 2, skeletal steed, lore of light
Tomb Prince, great weapon, armour of destiny (T5, 4++ can tank most attacks, S4 is puny though so he needs the GW. A little annoyed he can't take a halberd really)
Core: 40 Skellywags, spears, light armour, shields, full command (horde formation to try and get the CR up)
20 Skellywags with bows (high priest bunker)
5 horse archers (mounter priest bunker) 3 chariots, champion
3 chariots, champion
Special: 20 Tomb Guard, halberds, full command, banner of swiftness (with tomb prince, 7 wide 3 deep)
Warsphinx, fiery roar
2 tomb swarms (ebts, warmachine hunting in the absence of scorpions)
2 tomb swarms
Rare: Screaming skull catapult
Casket of souls
Necrosphinx
The models aren't really going to change for this week (unless I stumble upon the correct box in the spare room), but any thoughts on magic items/tactics? And also what exactly are the empire like to play against - I know there will be a steam tank, demigryphs, greatswords etc ......

Is Lore of Undead and other End of Times stuff allowed? It may provide some benefit (and fun, of course!) to you. Horse skellies unit - is free points for this opponent (especially with liche hero attached), sadly. You need brutal magic phase, so try to convert any more liches. Hierotitan helpes to (maybe some kid toy/figurine to "count as"?). Also try to make some fillers to raise your footslogging skellies - 40&20 are not enough (in my opinion). About magic&stuff. Neferra' scroll of incantations is awesome. Multiple mages is awesome (say, one Nehekhara lord, one Light lord, some Light lvl1 heroes with different cheap but handy items (15pts stability/shielding arcane for example). About empire. Be afraid of not only his cannons, but also Arch lector on altar - he'll obliterate your squishy skellies I hope I've been some help Tomb kings isn't "strong" army, but it isn't "bad army". ("There are not "bad armies" in Wh FB, mate") Have fun! P.S. We're all waiting for battle report!

No end times stuff I'm afraid, however a boosted vengeance every turn turned all my units into blenders and it was a major victory - there was only a steam tank with 1 wound left after 6 turns.
I split the liche off the horse archers before the game so they didn't lose fast cavalry, the horse archers messed with his pistoliers all game excellently.
Necrosphinx ate cannonball turn 1
tomb swarms removed both his gunlines of war machines with some casket help
warsphinx rampaged through 4 infantry units and also killed the arch lector
Tomb Guard with +1 attack and a 5++ just blended his main combat units.
The horde of 40 skellies were only a distraction and were wiped out by magic, shooting and combat but did their job of keeping everything else safe.
The game swung back and forth over the first 3 turns but 4-6 it was just a case of closing it out. Overall very happy, learned from my mistakes quickly and will have some new units to deploy next week

What did most wounds to the steamtank?
Seems the Warsphinx is MVP being a part of 4 empire unit takedowns, did you use its Thundercrush attack much?

Surprisingly the Tomb Guard did the damage on the steam tank, karl franz, Greatswords etc etc - S5 killing blow with extra attacks and hatred just delete's things. I don't think I'll ever go back to shields and swords with them. The big kitty had a slightly easier time as he thundercrushed the halberdier block, fiery breath and thunderstomp all at once allowed him to kill enough off to make it only a matter of time before he get rid of their steadfast and break them, T8 is amazing vs S4. The rest of the units were in fairness handgunners so he had an easy time in combat anyway but he still racked up a lot of points
