Another random musings post here.
Was thinking recently about what main (i.e. army wide) colours I’ve painted armies over the years, wondering if I had subconscious favourites I wasn’t aware of or if there was a big gap where I’d never painted an army with a particular colour. My painting has mainly been for warhammer fantasy but I did take into account stuff I’ve painted for 40k etc.
My painting history is below but what are your go to colours and are there any you really should paint at some point in your hobby career? Or are there shades you’re wary of attempting?
Colours I’ve used a lot:
Red. 2 full very red armies - Khorne warriors and Blood Angels. The cloaks and standards on my undivided warriors and the spot colour on my dwarfs.
Green. Wood elves and Nurgle warriors and daemons. And it’s the cloth colour on my Dwarfs. Soviet WWII armour.
Browns. Beastmen, Soviet infantry for flames of war. The Nurgle again. Dwarf beards.
Fleshtones. Beastmen again, chaos marauders and my Dwarfs.
Iron/steel. Dwarfs, Dwarfs and more Dwarfs. Brets. Dark Elves.
Out of these I would say fleshtones are my comfort zone. I still struggle with red. Painting green cloth on my Khorne marauders keeps making me think “I miss painting green” and prompted me to think about this post in the first place.
Colours I’ve used a reasonable amount:
Blue. My old Bretonnians’ army heraldry was mid-blue and white quarters (so all the knight champions and the peasants had this though the rest of the knights had individual colours). My old Dark Elves had dark blue robes and my first human blood bowl team were dark blue too. Light blue halves on my BB goblins. The only one of those I still own is the Gobbos. And this does mean that I’ve not painted a blue force since 2003 or something.
Black. My undivided warriors armour colour and my second human bloodbowl team’s main colour.
Colours I’ve not used much (and arguably should try more?)
White. The quarters on the Brets. My Dwarf Bloodbowl team.
Pink. The hair on my Daemonettes.
Purple. Daemonette chitin.
Yellow. Spot colour on human bloodbowl team number 2. And halves on my gobbo BB team. Nothing for warhammer.
Orange. Hair on my Slayers and some of my marauders.
Will be plenty more pink and purple going on when I paint the rest of my Slaanesh. I’ll take on yellow when I paint Tzeentch. I’ll revisit blue with Warmaster lizards or Failing that Tzeentch again.
Got some Imperial stormtroopers I started last year I need to finish so plenty of white there.
Orange? (Shrugs emoji)
