Hi all, In terms of issuing challenges, does it relate to specific models, or units? What I mean is- Let's say that two units are in CC- orcs and dwarfs for EG. Both units contain a full command, and 2 characters each.
The orc unit contains an orc Warboss and an orc shaman. The dwarf unit a dwarf Lord and a Thane BSB.
It's the orc players turn, and he issues a challenge from his orc Warboss to my Thane BSB. Am I at liberty to choose any of my characters EG the lord, the Thane, and the unit champion to accept? Or can I only accept/refuse with my BSB Thane?

The former. The player issuing a challenge chooses one of his eligible models as being the challenger, but he cannot nominate any enemy model to be challenged. However, if the enemy declines the challenge, the challenger chooses which enemy model has to be moved to the back ranks.
BRB p. 102: "To issue a challenge, choose one of your characters or champions in one of your units in the combat - this is the model that issues the challenge." [...]
If your opponent has issued a challenge, you can now accept it with one of your characters or champions whose unit is in base contact with the unit containing the issuer of the challenge. [...]
If no enemy character steps forward to meet the challenge, one of them must retire in ignominy. This character is nominated by the challenger -though he may not nominate a character that could not have accepted the challenge, or a unit champion — champions can accept challenges, they do not have to."

Perfect thanks Fvon.. I had a feeling I'd be hearing from you! What do you do for work? If you're not a lawyer or barrister you're in the wrong profession

Sorry, just thought of another follow-up qn... if the same scenario applies, but one of the dwarf thanes is on an oath stone, does that mean 'the unit' HAS to accept a challenge, or that HE has to accept the challenge, even though there may be 1-2 other options that could?
Honestly GW... why oh why make the rules so complex? Good example... 'fear' and 'terror' - why do we need both? Why not just one rule- 'fear'?

As Dwarfs AB p. 33 specifies: "a character with an Oath Stone must always accept a challenge (if your unit contains more than one character with an Oath Stone, you can choose which of them accepts the challenge)."
So, champions or characters without Oath Stone in that unit cannot be chosen.

So in the example there, if he points to my Lord and says "I challenge your Lord", I must step in & state that my Thane is the one that must accept?

Well, as explained above, he can only issue a general challenge, not a challenge targeting a specific character. If your Thane has an Oath Stone (or if he is forced to accept challenges for other reasons, and your Lord is not), you must choose the Thane to accept the challenge. If your unit would contain another character with an Oath Stone, you an choose between the characters with an Oath Stone.

I understand why mechanically challenge rules work this way; with one issuing a general challenge and the other party deciding it to accept with whomever they prefer. But thematically it'd be much cooler for characters to be able to challenge specific enemies.

Thematically you can look at it as a brave up and comer showing his bravery as he steps forward to prove his worth.
