Warhammer Fantasy Community:
Given the success of the EEFL Mega Battle in November at Daboyz, I would like to start talking about something for late 2017. The level of participation was great in 2016 but I would really like to see other forum members get involved. Imagine spending a long weekend at a scenic resort with all of your favorite forum members! I'm open to suggestions but I'd propose doing an escalation tournament format. Something like:
500 points 1000 points 2000 points 3000 points 2v2 Siege with teams built around rankings Skirmish (KevinC needs to refine rules for this)
Thoughts?
It would be nice to return to Bristol Harbor but depending on size, I would be willing to host such an event at my home next fall. I should easily have space for around 12 players.

I think getting events going would be a great thing! I heard about and then followed from afar the mega battle at DaBoyz and think your idea of doing something similar in 2017 would be great. In fact, thank you for bringing it up again! Having said that, allow to provide an opinion: What is happening around us, I feel, is that 9th Age continues on its path and I have personally seen many tournaments hosted often. Same with AOS, though to a lesser degree. It is my opinion, that if we are to remain relevant and an active player in this "game", we shouldn't rely on once a year events, but instead focus on quarterly events, at least. Whether those are actual tournaments with a winner, or more of a historical/end times/fluff scenario battles that lasts a whole day doesn't matter. But there are people out there that miss 8th and haven't found this forum. If we're able to make some noise and bring more people into the fold, I think that would be a great idea. Could even consider partnering with MiniWargaming, for example (and for sure get exposure on LiveWaaaaagh.com ). Anyway, just a thought. Happy to expand or have a discussion.

Thank you for mentioning miniwargaming! I absolutely love the battle reports done by Steve and it's great that they continue to support Warhammer Fantasy. Someone needs to connect the points between us and them...their battle reports should be advertised on here and we should be getting together with them to battle. I don't know how to get in touch with Steve, does anyone have the contact info? I also nominate KevinC as our champion to go and play him. KevinC needs to play with his Grom list.

Thanks for starting this topic Rich. We should start thinking/planning, at least for one event. I do like the idea of an escalation tournament, that is a pretty unique and interesting play style. Many years ago, when the 5th edition Siege book was released, I held a siege tournament at Simcon at the U of R. We had 12 players, which was perfect because we gathered 6 castles. I believe our own lano won the Siege Tournament with his Dwarfs and defeated the infamous Marster the Slaughterer's High Elves in the final round. The Marster had lost a bet and was forced to kiss the foot of Lord Lano, Siege Champion of Simcon!

Look I'd love to have you at Da Boyz but understand if you want to do something else. I'm also curious about the opportunity to have several different types of 8th ed events this year maybe a 1 day tournament and a 1 day (smaller) mega battle or maybe two things going on simultaneously.

Da Boyz was great last year. Maybe we should plan for an escalation tournament at Da Boyz?

Run the event that makes you guys happy. Could also do a mighty empires type campaign weekend. There is a market for 8th out there If you build it folks will come.

The pansy flim-flam elf being forced to bow before the stout and honourable dwarf is the way things should be!! Alas due to location I am unable to attend such an event. Regarding 8th Edition... Imo there are still heaps and heaps of people playing around the world but mostly in their own little private gaming groups. I was having a browse on the 9th age forums the other day and there was a thread talking about all the people who were unhappy with the most recent 9th age changes and had gone back to playing 8th edition.

I would play. Escalation style tournament sounds cool to me. The one Rich ran about a year ago at Just Games worked well and had a good format. I believe that one was 500, 1000, 2000 and a 100 point skirmish. We did that in one day and it wasn't even an entire day. I think maybe noon to 8. So with a full weekend event we could obviously fit more games in.

I wonder if there is a way to take the escalation style tournament one more step and create a type of linked battle experience. What I mean by this is the results of the earlier games somehow impact the bigger games latter on. For example, maybe the 500 point army in the first game is a scouting force patrolling the lands and they come upon an invading enemy army. If you win this first battle it might mean that the scouting force gets back to a castle well in advance so in a siege battle latter the siege defenders are better prepared. This might translate to the defending army being a few hundred points larger to represent the fact that there was time to gather troops from surrounding areas and bring them into the castle. These are just thoughts of course. It might end up being to complex to realistically do in a weekend tournament.

Yes dannytee, I like that – linking the scenarios of the escalation tourney into a narrative campaign. For example, battle 1 could be about holding a bridge, if the defender holds the bridge he gets, say 150 points of reinforcements in the next game, if he doesn't hold the bridge he suffers 150 points penalty in the next game, etc. It would be about the scenarios - fighting for a magic item, holding off a defender for reinforcements, capturing advantageous terrain, etc.
It might even be interesting to fight the same player for all three games. You could even fight the three game escalation narrative with same player, then make the final (4th) game a large mega battle, with everyone in the tournament.

This is awesome you guys are so active in trying to make something happen and keep the game alive, 8th edition is so amazing.
What could I do to help organize anything? I'm for the idea of something more than once a year, heck I haven't played in so long I want to play once a week hahaha
