Hi all,
So tonight I put my Averland Empire army to work defending the realm from the threat of the mighty lizardmen, led by their stinking battle-toad slaan mage. Broadly speaking, heres how the armies looked:
Empire
Battle Wizard Lord on foot lvl4 (fire)
Heroes
2 x warrior priests
Captain BSB on foot
Battle Wizard mounted lvl2
Captasus
Master engineer
Core
51 halberdiers w 15 xbow detachment
5 inner circle knights
Special
3 demigryphs
1 Cannon
24 greatswords
Rare
Steam tank
Hellblaster volley gun
Lizardmen
Lords
Saurus oldblood on carnosaur
Slaan mage priest
Core
Skink cohort with 4 kroxigor
25ish saurus Warriors
Special
25ish temple guard
Stegadon
Ancient stegadon
8 cold one riders
My 2 warrior priests went into my 2 infantry units, my lvl4 into my xbows and my lvl2 unit my knights.
It felt like the lizardman side of the table looked incredibly light, but then my opponent (my brother) had put all his eggs into some incredibly expensive baskets...
Heres how the battlefield looked after deployment:
We rolled off & Empire went first! Barely any movement happened - I inched my Stank forward & hid my Captasus behind a building. In the magic phase, I cast Flame Cage irresistibly on the cold ones, causing a single wound to them, and a wound to each of my wizards on the miscast table. Shooting my Stank put a couple of wounds on his carnosaur, and the cannon killed a single Skink & that was that.
Lizardman turn 1 - I expected him to surge forward, eager to engage me in close combat, but instead, rather bizarrely, he held back somewhat. His Carnosaur and Stegadon edged a few inches forward but hid from my hellblaster. His slaan mage & temple guard bodyguards moved around 4 inches, and he decided against moving his cold ones due to the flame cage. His magic phase went ok - he cast Tempest on my halberdiers, hitting 25 & killing 12.
Empire turn 2- again, Limited movement - I knew full-well I had him outgunned, and therefore I wasn't in any rush to engage him, so again I held firm. Magic phase was a low scoring affair - I got a fireball off at his Ancient Stegadon, causing 2 wounds and he dispelled the rest. In the shooting phase my Cannon killed a Kroxigor in his cohort, along with a couple of Skinks. My Stank shot a cannonball at his Carnosaur, killing its Lord in one fell swoop... 400 points that cost me, he complained. Heres how the board now looked:
Lizardmen turn 2 - he again edged forward, with his skink unit attempting a hail-mary charge on my Cannon, which failed, leaving him open to further shooting. His temple guard unit seems lost in the middle of the park, somewhat boxed-in by the terrain. His ancient Stegadon moves forward in the middle of the park and he marches his cold-ones up the flank. Magic is a washout, with double-1 rolled for winds no spells go off. He shoots at my xbows but kills only 1.
Empire turn 3- I charge his cold-one riders with my knights and make the charge. My Captasus flies over his mage unit & nestles into his back-yard. My halberdier unit moves up.
Winds of magic are poor but i get off 'speed on light' on my knight unit. Shooting is big though - my Cannon kills another kroxigor & a couple of skinks, and my steam tank fires its steam Cannon & kills his Stegadon in a single shot. My hellblaster, aided by the master engineer, takes aim & obliterates his Ancient stegadon.
Buffed by 'speed of light' my knights kill 3 cold ones, and lose none in return. He loses combat by 3 but holds due to being cold-blooded. At this point he concedes - its a crushing victory for the Empire!
Post-battle thoughts: my opponent was out-deployed, out-mageuvered, and out-played, but he also had horrible dice to boot, so it's no surprise he lost by as much ad he did. I ended up losing only 14 men in total. I think his army list was poor too, but in his defence it was a quickly thrown-together list for an army he'd not used before. His selection was a classic case of too many eggs on one basket, and not enough 'bodies'. All in all a bit of a damp squib but I'm looking forward to trying lizards myself sometime soon!
