I've also challenged my Lizardmen friend to a battle sometime this quartal.
I don't know much about Lizardmen except that he pretty much often comes with large infantry blocks.
So I'm assuming I could bring a few cannons for the larger monsters and mortars, maybe a Helblaster, and use a large infantry block of Halberdiers for core, maybe supported by a decent group of Greatswords?
Best lore? Shadow, I'm assuming their INI is pretty low? Anything else?

Lizardmen can also have lots of scouts, so careful where you deploy your war machines.

We've got too few details to provide an actual answer as there are simply too many variable we know nothing about. Are you guys rolling for scenarios or are you picking one before the battle? is there going to be any terrain on the table? If so what type? Is this meant to be a fun game or are you guys looking to annihilate each other? Are you guys planning on only using painted and available miniatures (in which case your list will be affected by your collection) or are you proxying anything with anything? You could take a few approaches to the game by focusing on what you excel (shooting and arguably cavalry) or try to contrast what he is the master of (magic). Artillery is going to do some serious damaged to any army, especially lizardmen. I prefer the mortar to the cannon but either an excellent choice. The hellblaster is always a favourite of many imperial generals but I'm myself partial to the Helstorm Rocket Battery (which could shine against large infantry blocks). You could also field a much more mobile army comprised almost solely of mounted models which give you lots of maneuverability and quite the punch in combat as well.

Sorry myself for the late reply. Warhammer hasn't been on my mind much lately. The community is pushing hard for TOW and I think TOW sucks just as bad as 8th edition, but in different areas. Anyhow, thanks for the tips. We haven't played yet but when we do it will hopefully be 8th. We only play the standard Battleline with a few forrests and rocks, and usually a hill on each side. Enemy has a bunch of different units, mostly Krox and Skinks in core, Stegadons and Bastiladon, Slaan etc. With Empire, I have pretty much everything at my disposal.
