Warhammer Scenery – What’s the BEST and most USEFUL?
I have been working on some unfinished scenergy projects and it got me thinking…
Given the 8th edition rule set, what scenery do you find yourself using the most?
I have a ton of forests built, and a bunch or marshlands, and some ruins.
Forests are MEH, but the D6 randomization is at least interesting. They don't really factor into maneuvering tactics though. Units just seem to breeze through forests.
I have a couple “Village” buildings, two War Machine sized towers.
How about Hills? They seem next to worthless in 8th.
Any good scratch built Mystical Monuments? (I’m a visual guy, use pictures)
Bane Stones? Way Stones? Portals?

I'll post terrain later but I really like medium sized buildings and woods. Talking purely aesthetic of course. I just like the look of a fantasy battlefield with trees and buildings.

When jerkface and I play we usually roll for terrain on the table from the rule book. It keeps things interesting and lets you try out different terrain you wouldn't otherwise use. Of course this means you need a large selection. My favorite result from that table is 2 or 12 on 2d6 (I believe that is right but I'm working from memory). One is a settlement of order and the other is a settlement of destruction. You get a few buildings, maybe a wall and one the magical type terrain pieces. It looks cool on the battle field all grouped together.

Wow! Those look really cool, Rick! I especially like the Obelisk! I don't have any pics right now, you you can see some in my army pics. I bought a set from some manufacturer other than GW a few years ago that was a bunch or rocks on round bases jutting out at various angles. Those have been useful. I use the larges one (almost the size of that Obelisk) as my Banestone. You can see some of them in this pic: My friends and I usually roll from the book to see what we get too. We them divide the table up into 6 separate 2x2 squares and number them 1-6. For each piece of terrain we roll a D6. That's the square it goes in. Then we alternate placing it in that square. It's random, but still gives us some control as to "choosing" our battlefield. Once everything has been placed, then we roll off to see which side we get, so it's still in your best interest not to set things up too one-sided. I like using forests though. They do stuff. I like that. I hardly ever use a river though. If we roll that up, we usually skip it and do it again. (Unless we go crazy with them and put them everywhere or are trying to capture/defend a village, etc.) I've also bought some Sphinx pieces from Aquarium kits, I bought an "Anubis" statue from Reaper to act as my Sinister Statue. The only thing that I haven't really found a good solution to before now was the Wizard's Portal(?) that shoots out random spells at the closest unit each turn. Now that GW has released the Warp Portal Terrain for AoS, I'm totally getting one of those solely for that purpose.

It's important to consider the true LOS rule in 8th edition when building terrain. The best EEFL terrain I've seen is at the Unplugged GT on the east coast. They make forest jammed packed so that you can't see through them and large hills and walls that block site to monsters, etc.

This thread motivated me, prompting a 1 week quasi-break from basecoating... Working on forests + scree + statues + palantir + bogs + fences
Also making a "Smokestack" lava vent piece Also making some stone wall bullwarks
Thanks all for the input

I always tend to use a lot of the walls and fences in my games, they look good and have nice rules. They play havock with my chariots though. I'd love to use more trees, I've got the citadel woods but I don't really like them, the trees are too fat and prone to toppling over and the leaves snag on things and try to break off. It's a real shame GW has discontinued all of the brilliant buildings, their new realm gates are very expensive and two dimensional but they are obviously going o make more terrain so it will be interesting to see what they come out with.
Othe products I like the look of but haven't purchased yet are the battlefield in a box rivers and streams and woodland scenics tree armatures.

Other products I like the look of but haven't purchased yet are the battlefield in a box rivers and streams and woodland scenics tree armatures. I need to make my scenery from leftover stuff. I am on a budget, and can't afford $50 for a gateway. They do look VERY NICE, but I'd rather buy more dudes on wolves or horses than a gateway. Well, I should clarify - I don't think I can afford the GW scenery kits... Tell me more of this battlefield in a box?

This is 100% how I feel. I find making my own scenery to be fun and also inexpensive. I have never been able to justify buying fancy scenery, GW or otherwise. Especially considering the GW stuff still requires assembly and painting so the time requirement is still pretty large.

Well, I should clarify - I don't think I can afford the GW scenery kits... Tell me more of this battlefield in a box? I think it's manufactured by Galeforce 9 and its all prepainted. They have a fairly huge range but it's their rivers that are of greatest interest to me as they have a good selection of pieces to make different length/complexity rivers. I think they have a good appearance to cost ratio but one downside is the water is maybe a bit too blue looking.

After 2 weeks, I have about 10 scenery pieces 100% DONE, about 10 pieces mostly done, and about 10 more in process. Here's some trees I built... More scenic than tactical.

That picture (above) shows 4 small stands of individual trees and 2 medium sized marshlands. AKA Swamps, AKA Boglands. Here's just the trees: Here's just the bogs: I like the flexibility that 6 individual pieces give me, aesthetically. For 8th rules, if each of these counts as ONE piece of terrain, meh.

Up next, another project where I did multiple pieces on the same theme. Again, these are forests. This did, I did a different foliage look - more wispy. Tangled, Narsty. This screams Wood Elf to me. And here are the three pieces combined, complete with actual Wood Elf dudes and dudettes hanging out in the plank work connecting the trees. I always refer to the combined piece with connecting catwalks as the "Ewok Village".
