The only thing that I don't like about using square or rectangular bases for war machines is that it can imply a rear or flank. A round base eliminates that. Meh. Just one less thing to debate for me.

I don't like bases period on warmachines because it creates implied situations where template weapons would have an easier time hitting the artillery piece.
That being said I intend to go the 9th Age route and base all my artillery/warmachines on 60mm rounds.

Yes, there are some that may take advantage of basing war machines for practical purposes. But if that problem arises, you can always hit them with - BRB p. 109: When measuring to and from the war machine, measure to or from the body of the machine, by which we mean the closest part of the chassis, wheels or the weapon itself (ignore any spikes, piles of cannonballs, sprockets, banners and so on).

Of course, if the (metaphorical) weight of the BRB sohuld not be enough to convince your opponent, you can always "impress' him with the physical weight of the BRB, and hit him over the head with it. Empire players with the old metal Steam Tank should always carry a sock to put the Tank in for the same purpose, but with better effects.
