As it says on p. 69: "Enemies with Flaming Attacks cause Fear in war beasts, cavalry and chariots." It does not limit this to Flaming Attacks in CC. Do the Peasant Bowmen have Flaming Attacks, if equipped with a braziers? Yes. Ergo, they cause Fear in war beasts etc. The same applies to e.g. spells of the Lore of Fire, whether they can be used in CC or not, because the Lore attribute specifies that "All of the spells in the Lore of Fire are Flaming Attacks." So, a Fire Wizard will ipso facto always cause Fear in war beasts etc. as long as he knows a single spell. I am all for verisimilitude (to the point I don't shoot gunpowder weapons through my units), but ultimately, game rules cannot, don't, and don't have to be an accurate reflection of reality.

Makes sense to me! (I too wish that more units had the "Flammable" special rule. That would make things like the Banner of Eternal Flame and the Dragonbane Gem much, much more effective!)

The Banner of Eternal Flame is actually one of the few magic standards I (as an Empire player) find worthwhile taking against most enemies. There is not much point in taking it e.g. against Dwarfs, of course.

I've seen a lot of people do this. Why? Does it give the unit it is in magical attacks? I could then see it's use against ethereal units.

While it is true that Fear and Terror are not what they used to be, the banner causes Fear in war beasts etc., or it will neutralise/mitigate Fear/Terror that those units themselves may cause. That is well worth 10 points.

As a reminder: Monstrous Cavalry, being cavalry, is affected too. And I forgot to answer your question: the Flaming Attacks of the Banner are not magical.

Just watch out for those dragonhelm/gem characters! And those pesky Dragon Princes/Irondrakes. If they're stubborn/unbreakable they can tie that unit up all game!
My regular opponent in college eventually stopped taking the flaming banner as that was where my dragonbane gem Daemon Prince inevitably ended up!

And just be aware characters with magical weapons are not effected by the banner, the problem you'll usually have is that they'll strike before the unit and not say negate regen where the unit will.

Page 69 and I quote "Any unit may be equiped with Braziers (all arrows count as flaming attacks) for +5 pts/unit"
You don't shot whilst in combat so the peasants hand weapon would not be counted as a flaming attack.

A death wizard can make flaming attacks through magic. Does he get fear vs cavalry?

Greg That is correct, and in CC, the Dragonbane Gem would not work against Peasant Bowmen with braziers. I suspect, however, that in most cases it would not make much difference.

A death wizard can make flaming attacks through magic. Does he get fear vs cavalry? What do you mean? How does a Death Wizard have Flaming Attacks? Certainly not through spells of the Lore of Death.

Some additional comments:
- There is actually an FAQ on the matter.
BRB Official Update Version 1.9, p.9:
Q: Do all forms of Flaming Attacks cause Fear in war beasts, cavalry and chariots? (p69) A: Yes, any model that has a Flaming Attack will cause Fear. This includes unit upgrades, models that only have ranged flaming attacks and even Wizards with spells that cause Flaming Attacks.
- The only Lore where all the spells are ipso facto Flaming Attacks is the Lore of Fire. The Lore of Metal says in its Lore Attribute (BRB p. 494): "No armour saves are permitted against wounds caused by spells from the Lore of Metal, which also always count as Flaming Attacks." This could be read that all spells of the Lore of Metal are Flaming Attacks. However, in an past discussion elsewhere, it turned out that the Magic Cards specify for 4 of the 6 spells that the "Lore attribute does not apply to this spell." In other Lores, there are specific spells that are identified as FA (like Shem's Burning Gaze of the Lore of Light), and any Wizard with such a spell will cause Fear. - For Empire Players: Soulfire itself is not a Flaming Attack - therefore a WP does not cause Fear, until after Soulfire has been successfully cast.
