I usually make my BSBs quite defensive as well. I don't always mount them, but they are usually nestled tightly into the thick of hordes. A Talis. of Pres., Enchanted Shield, Heavy Armor and a Sea Dragon Cloak will give you that 1+, 4++. But if I'm being honest, I usually give him the Armor of Destiny, Sea Clock and a GW. That only give him a 3+, 4++, but also S6. Whatever comes at him is gonna take some damage.

Honestly, I haven't even really considered the Hag as my BSB simply because they'd have to be mounted on the Cauldron of Blood just to have that 5++. That really becomes quite the heavy investment when you calculate her price tag, the BSB ability, the Cauldron, the unit and any other special abilities (Witchbrew) that you may add.
Now, if that's what you're specifically going for, then it all works, but you're going to have to invest heavily into one fragile unit. Not really where I want my BSB is be camping out.

Well, it IS made from the hide of a DRAGON, it had better be tougher than the skin of an overgrown pussycat!
What you use for a BSB depends heavily on the rest of the army. You need a unit to bunker it in (barring a Dark Peggy or Manti Master BSB), but that unit has to be able to stand close enough to the main combat to allow the BSB to give his bonuses.
In the end, all the BSB options are viable. You just have to design your army around them, or design them to fit your army (winds up being the same thing either way).

Yeah, I agree. I've themed my DEs around a Black Ark crew. Mostly Corsair based with 90 total. 30 Witch Elves, 5 Dark Riders and 30 Dark Shards rounding out my core.

Regarding gamezone is it resin or metal? Not that fond of their metal minis as they need too much work to get fitted

It appears to be resin from the photos.

Is this an issue with their entire range? I was looking at getting their questing knights equivalent (though still might anyway)

All bigger metal parts needed greenstuff to fill gaps. Personally, I would ask if they have resin on any piece you are interested in. The overall quality of he sculpts are great. I will upload a photo with example in a while.

Yikes! I'll keep that in mind! I still have scars (mentally) from some of those old metal GW kits that didn't go together well and needed a LOT of work to be passable. It's one thing I DON'T miss about metal to be honest. I am planning on picking up a couple of their sorceress' on pegasus (one will be used as a mount for a master and the sorceress will ride a horse instead) so I'll make sure to psych myself up mentally for the work that may or may not be involved with it

I had some of the same issues with a Dark Pegasus that I made. I used one of their normal Wood Elf horses and attached Dark Pegasus wings to it, so there was some Green Stuff work going on anyway, but it definitely had all of the classic metal model problems. Other than that, it's a great model.
