Hi everyone, I was wondering if any of you already took the plane with a warhammer army. Many players are in different countries and I find it difficult to carry an entire army around if you need to fly. I am currently using the bag/case below to transport my armies, it’s a fantastic bag that allows me to put everything I need from 2000 to 3000pts including army books, dice, tape measure, iPad, etc... But I don’t think it’s possible to bring that in an airplane cabin, it’s too big. And I’m never putting my models in the cargo hold. Any businessmen or seasoned travelers that would know a way to safely travel long distance with our beloved armies ? I fly a lot and I wouldn’t mind bringing my models to meet other hobbyists when I’m near a gaming hub.

While not overly experienced with it, I have found that I could alter my carry on suitcase to hold foam for armies instead. I only used it for my most precious of models when I moved from the UK back to America. However in theory it should work on a larger scale. That said I would love to hear others opinions about it.

There are some bags from Battlefoam that people use for carry on. But for larger armies that gets more tricky. Also you can use foam from Battlefoam or the like and just put it in your existing carry on roll on suitcase.
Honestly I've played around with a number of travel case options and I think putting foam in an existing suitcase may just be cheaper and you know it 'fits.'
Cargo hold might be easier but does run some risks!

Not sure it will be possible to carry big armies, but it's worth a try. I will order some foam and make some testing later to see how it goes.

Is there a hard case that you could use? I'd be more inclined to use something along those lines.

I think the best approach if you know you are going to be travelling is to have at least one army that minimizes the total number of models. Just makes it easier. It might not be as effective as an army designed without space constraints but it's nice to have a small easy to carry easy to deploy and put away list.
The year I took my first Beastman horde in 2008 to a GT I was putting away minis for 30-40 minutes after my last round ended. . . so very very frustrating.

Gotta go with elite, low model counts armies. Not convenient for my vampire counts with the base model counts being already pretty high, and then you have to add all the extra stuff to summon. I will try to work something out though, it must be doable. For me the point is never to be ultra competitive, I'm not a power player. I just play for fun so if I can get a low model count list that still make sense and "works", it would be ok.

Blood Knight army, chock FULL of Vampires! That'd be the worst army to travel with! If they're metal, they'll fall apart, if they're resin they'll come out of the case with droopy lance syndrome. Plastic is by far the best material to travel with (though single-piece metal characters are fine), so long as you avoid the newer GW kits with fragile little bits (spirit hosts etc.). I've never flown with models, but I have transported mine a fair bit - I use KR multicase for that (though I've heard good things about Battlefoam and Feldherr too). The combination of the soft foam + sturdy card case + travel cases is ideal for transport. My suggestion would be to pick a casing supplier that you like (they all have their own systems/sizes, so for interchangeability of your collection it's best to stick to one), then find a smaller case than the one you have that's within airline hand luggage size limits. You'll probably have to cut down your model count, but then that's also an excuse to start an army of sturdy plastic ogres...

I agree that making a smart army choice will save much heartbreak later. Ogres is a good one although some of their 'fun' stuff is pretty large and with protruding bits that are waiting for an excuse to break. I think single piece metal dwarfs is as sturdy and compact as it gets. So that would be my choice of army for a 'road warrior' -type business traveler.
My one experience with miniatures on a plane was moving my entire collection across an ocean. Used a whole dedicated suitcase with LOTS of padding, i.e. checked baggage. There was some breakage but not too bad. What I did not appreciate was at check-in opening that very carefully packed suitcase and unwrapping my little toys. If I had to move halfway across the world again, I would go with a postal or courier service. A bit of a nail biter if the packages make it but, checked baggage gets lost all the time as well. If you want your miniatures safe, don't move them. Keep them in a vault. deep in a mountain. guarded by a dragon...or two.
