So in rules, it stated that you place the counter completely within line of sight.
Does that mean you can't place it in the center of a unit with multiple ranks/rows? As in most cases, the feet of the units in front is in the way of seeing the ground further down the ranks/rows.

With the 8th edition true line of sight, almost anything can be possible. The best way to check is to use a laser pointer. Furthermore, do the rules actually say it has to be "on the ground, or just "completely within line of sight"? You might not see the ground, but you may still be able to see part of a model.

That is actually true. It didn't say ground. Think I have misunderstood shooting with canon (where it can be a point on the ground) and then mixed up with shrieker.
