Hi guys,
Quick question here, if I take 6 demigryph knights in 2 ranks of 3, how many supporting attacks can the second rank make ?
Being monstrous I thought that the chickens could make all their attacks for supporting from the second rank, but somewhere in the rule book they say that only the rider can make all his supporting attacks from the second rank of monstrous cavalry.
This would totally negate the option of taking more than one rank of demis as it's really the chicken that make damage with their 3xS5 armor piercing attacks and not the riders with their single attack.
Any insight on this matter ?
Thank you very much.

You've said it yourself: Only the rider makes his attack.
you might still want a second rank if you plan on charging them into a situation where you are expecting some heavy return fire or you risk losing one or more models to a round of shooting, magic or terrain tests.
Essentially the strategic reason to keep your demigryphs in a 3x2 formation is so you can maintain the attack output of the front line for as long as possible.
on the other hand having two groups of 3 might give you other advantages as well such as maneuverability or presenting multiple targets and so forth... all offset by having them become more fragile to any kind of return attacks.
In the end the choice ultimately falls on what role you see them having on the battlefield.

You can find the actual rule in the BRB Official Update Version 1.9, p. 4:
Page 83 – Monstrous Cavalry. Add “MONSTROUS SUPPORT Furthermore, the rider of a monstrous cavalry model can make as many supporting attacks as are on its profile, up to a maximum of three.” to the end of the paragraph.

I think that the ideal configuration of Demis is taking two units of 4 Demigryphs. This usually maximizes their attacks as well as giving you maneuverability and multiple threats. If one fails a Ld test for whatever reason and runs off the board, then you still have another that can do what they do.
I'm pretty sure GW knew this when they introduced this set. That's why they only come in boxes of three. Forces you to buy another box! (I have 9, btw.)
Watch out for things like Fanatics!

What mottdon said. Remember that a second rank will also add more targets for the same shot by cannon, bolt trowers etc.
