Today I will fight Skaven with the army I prepared to face OnG or Ogres. But it's an all-comers list. We rolled meeting engagement and Skaven deployed first and got first turn. Vanguard on Warhawks. Spells I rolled 2,3,5,6 and think that's a perfect roll His spells,

Pre-thoughts
I always think Skaven and a grey seer a hard matchup. Especially if they have 13th. This time I have dwellers though. As we both have level 4 on 1500p it will be a wizard showdown.
I also field a lot more RnF(for woodies) and some units I have not played in a while. FUN!
Just need to keep myself away from the poison gutters and power 8+ warpcannon.

Turn 1 Skaven Grey seer got 1 warp token Woods slaves entered during deployment was fungus and stupidity test was passed Charges: the little wheel charged the scouts and was killed by the stand and shoot reaction with poison arrows. Movement: rats moved forward, gutters took the tower. Magic: good magic roll with a channel for 7vs 3 dice. Flying was shoot down (howling warpgate). Warp lightning did a wound on treeman when dice failed to stop. But a fail 3 dice cast attempt stopped the last spell. Shooting: doom rocket with perfect hit killed 21 of the eternal guard (remembers why I never play these). Gutter runners made a wound on treeman, warp lightning cannon did a wound on treeman. Close Combat: no cc. Wood Elves Charges: Not sure what do when I didn't have any EG left. Rangers charged the slaves because I thought I could double charge me but found out the treeman was out of arc for dwellers the grey seer so needed to change plan and the ancient charged the other slaves. Movement: gg, scouts and waywatchers moved forward. Hawks crawled forward... Magic: 6+1 dice no channels. I 6 dice a huge dweller but it met a dispel scroll. And failed a one dice, Thorne. Shooting: hawk riders missed, GG killed the flame thrower, scouts missed the cannon and waywatcheds killed a rat. Close Combat: rangers killed some slaves but also lost as many themselves. Freeman killed some slaves.

Turn 2 Skaven Charges: no charges Movement: clan rats moved out of position for dwellers. Storm vermin into position for a flank charge. Magic: big magic phase again 5+4. but I managed to channel this time so I got 6 dice. Again flying and shooting was shoot down (howling warpgate). Scorched was stopped but warp lightning killed song GG. Shooting: warp cannon hit S 10 and killed the ancient, gutter runners killed all way watchers. Close Combat: slaves and rangers grinded some more. Game over before Woodie's second turn.

Short recap of a small fast game. It was over before it began.
As always I always regret how I deployed. I should have deployed in the opposite corner to wait until opportunities raised.
Not much to say about perfect roll on doom rocket and S10 warp cannon. It happens and a part of the game.

Ouch. Those spells you rolled were the last thing that went your way the entire game. Losing one combat block early was bad, and the Wildwood Rangers are wasted against large blocks of low level infantry - it was unfortunate they didn't have anything better like Rat Ogres to target.
Howling Warpgale is so annoying, and completely crippled a unit. It's annoying that Skaven have both that and the Storm Banner.

Never underestimate Skaven Slaves. Pointwise they are one of the best units in the game.

Howling did a lot, but the game was over so fast it didn't matter as I could charge the cannon earliest turn 2. The -1 to hit did some too as I could not kill anything else then the weapons team turn 1 with true flight arrows.

When facing a horde army like Skaven, you know they're going to spam Slaves and just bring tons of bodies. Wood Elves don't stand a chance in a grind against an army like that. There's just too few of them. So, if your opponent is going to play like that, then you should too, and bring a WE avoidance army. Jump around and make him turn circles all game. It'll flip the tables and do exactly what he was planning to do to you - frustrate you into mistakes.

mottdon, I didn't tailor my list. Still waiting to face OnG or Ogres with the same list but he got sick and yet have not been able to play

I don't think that it'd be so much "tailoring" your list, but rather playing to your strengths. When you play Skaven or Goblins, you expect to face a LOT of cheap troops and some nasty tricks. That's their strength and how they're played. With WE, you may have a few more options of play, but one of their strongest is avoidance. Move and shoot, repeat. Nobody should fault you for playing to your army's strengths.
