I think I am pretty different from most people here I started 8ed just 2 years ago and have earlier only painted since 6ed(never played)/epic(tried to play)/mordheim(played a little) but with a huuuuuuuuge break. My neighbor with kids at the same age came over and saw me getting back into painting. Painting zombies to another game. He asked me if I didn't want to play/paint Warhammer instead as there were 3 people playing on our hill. I told him I had an old wood elves army somewhere (still not found) and would love to learn the game. The same night I picked up an army on a Facebook selling group. And a couple of weeks later he introduced me to my first game against OnG. I of course lost but had a great time and am hooked. He is very good at rules (amazing if you count that he has never played in a tournament and google was his only rule friend). He is very casual in a casual OnG way. That is black orcs, savage orcs big uns, doom divas, rock lobbas, fanatics and so on I later was allowed to play our second neighbor with a skaven army. Of course, I lost this game too. But as I have a very competitive nature and always want to be good at anything I start and go all in and bought a WoC army to stop losing and have a simpler army. And the rest is history with a huge amount of posts here

I am impressed how good your memories are. 8th came out ~10yrs ago. I don't remember much of games from back then and certainly not what edition we played.

My first 8th edition game was against TheREALricksalamone. We both got the new rule book within a week of release and read through it like madmen. After reading through it quickly we got together for a game. I played dwarves and he played empire. I don’t remember points values but it was a decent sized game, I would guess 2,400 points. I remember reading the horde and step up rules and knew I wanted to try a horde of great weapon dwarves so had a warriors horde in my army. I also had some warmachines as wanted to try those out with the new pre-measure rules. Many of the specifics now elude me but I remember a good deal of stopping to double check rules (which was good for learning). I remember a dwarf horde getting hit by a direct hit from an empire mortar 5” template and getting decimated (the 7th edition empire book was still in effect so the mortar was S3, under the 8th edition book it was changed to S2). I remember both sides took heavy losses during the game. I remember finishing the game and making a comment about how it felt like such a bloody game. Between the step up rules, hordes, pre-measure for warmachines the dead minis pile for both sides was huge. I don’t recall who won but looking back at it now it was clear a golden age of warhammer had arrived, one that would live on to this day. We were hooked! EEFL!

Been playing since 4th edition (around 1994), I really disliked 7th edition due to the powercreep, so was really happy when 8th was released, my first game was vs Vampire Counts, I was keen on trying out the new rules so I had not only one, but 2 hordes of Marauders of Khorne with great weapons, these units wiped my opponents entire army from the table. I remember thinking that hordes & level 4 casters were the shit now, while cavalry had become very bad, some of this is still true, however now I use hordes of trolls instead when I horde any unit from WoC, marauders doubled in price & have been bad ever since…

My first game was I think 2000pts or 2400pts against lizardmen. I still remember that I fielded 3 big squig herds and a unit of 8 trolls. That game I also had a Orc great shaman with the waaagh spell and power scroll. I don't think I need to mention what did happen to my opponent his army. I used that list a lot until we got the 8ed army book, but boy I did have a great time in the tournaments with that combo.
Cheers, WGG
