The idea of these polls is to compare two similar Chaos Dwarf units head to head. The units may be similar in terms of function, unit type, battlefield roll, etc. The objective is to compare the units in terms of game play performance. So try not to include aesthetic, lore/fluff or model preferences in your decision. Simply which of the two units would you most often choose if you were building a competitive list? Bull Centaur Renders vs. K'daai FirebornMovementThe advantage in terms of movement clearly goes in favour of the Bull Centaur Renders for the following reasons: - movement value of 7 (as compared to the Fireborn's 6)
- access to a musician and thus swift reforms
- Swiftstride
Survivablity In favour of the Bull Centaur Renders: - 3+ armour save is better against strength 3 or below [also the option of taking shields for a 2+]
- extra point of toughness (T5 vs. T4)
- extra wound (3W vs. 2W)
- Does not self harm (Fireborn have the Burning Bright rule)
- No Unstable special rule
In favour of the K'daai Fireborn:
- 4+ Ward save is better than a 3+ armour save against attacks of S5+ and attacks that ignore armour [protection from cannons, Searing Doom, HKB, etc]
- Non-magical attacks must re-roll successful wounds
- 2+ ward save against flaming attacks
- Unbreakable
Offensive Prowess in Close Combat
In favour of the Bull Centaur Renders:
- GW option gives them S6 (as compared to the Fireborn's S5)
- Offensive output can't be neutered by a character with a dragonhelm or dragonbane gem
In favour of the K'daai Fireborn:
- S4 auto hit against all enemies in base contact
- Better stomp (S5 vs S4)
- Higher Initiative
Other considerations
In favour of the Bull Centaur Renders: - more weapon options: shields, GW, AHW, etc.
- access to full command
- one unit can take a magic standard (50 points or less)
- unlocks the Bull Centaur Taur'ruk hero
- cheaper points cost (for most builds)
In favour of the K'daai Fireborn:
- better at blocking/screening cannon balls for high value targets (via ward save)
- more resistant to war machines (via ward save), especially against war machines with flaming attacks
Personally I favour the Bull Centaur Renders because they have more flexibility in builds and don't self harm. I'm curious to see how everyone else feels!
Vote and discuss!

I will go back an field my Bulls more but for me so far the bulls are less then suboptimal and very seldom gets their points back and the fireborn even better then the destroyer. I hold them as one of the best LoA unit out there. You need to run then in 6 or more though as you will lose one every game.
I would field bulls only because they look awesome and they are iconic.
Fireborn I would have a hard time to leave home in a competitive tournament.

and the fireborn even better then the destroyer. I hold them as one of the best LoA unit out there. This is the first time I have heard this claim. While I concede that Fireborn have the advantage of being more difficult to bring down via cannon / war machine fire (due to their greater wound count and being separate entities), I think almost everything else falls in favour of the Destroyer. 1 Destroyer and 6 Fireborn are separated by 5 points. The big advantage that the Fireborn have are their combined 12 wounds, as compared to the 6 of the Destroyer. They also have 12 attacks compared to the Destroyer's average of 8, however the Destroyer's attacks are at S7, while the Fireborn are only S5. In most cases, I'd rather have 8 S7 attacks at my disposal than 12 S5 attacks. Everything else seems to be in favour the Destroyer: - +3 movement
- +1 WS
- +2 Strength
- +2 Toughness (this is further compounded because of the re-rolling of mundane successful wounds)
- +1 Initiative
- +1 Leadership
The Destroyer's Thunderstomp is also far better than the stomps of the Fireborn because they are at S7 vs. S5. The Destroyer is also more resistant to characteristic tests. So what have I missed? Why do you feel that the Fireborn are better than the Destroyer?

Bull centaurs don't get a stomp unfortunately Why not? They are monstrous beasts and as per the page 85 of the BRB: " Monstrous beasts have the Stomp special rule".

frenzy (specifically the forced pursue) is not great. but, that is about the only bad thing. Is the footprint that different from a big unit of fireborn? the damage output of the destroyer is certainly much higher.
I do remember the salty tears on warseer of people who got violated by the destroyer. On the contrary, fireborn were rated as rather mediocre. All internet hearsay, I've never played with or against either....yet.

The Destroyer's Thunderstomp is also far better than the stomps of the Fireborn because they are at S7 vs. S5. The Destroyer is also more resistant to characteristic tests. So what have I missed? Why do you feel that the Fireborn are better than the Destroyer? Because of frenzy. The big foot print and and average player will make sure it is no way near where it is suppose to be. Chasing chaff all game. You will need at least two khans trying to guide it right. Against no chaff players or first time opponents or armies with no chaff it’s great. Maybe it’s just me but as often as it’s great it has also been the worst unit in my army. The foot print is large (100X150), but the equivalent value of Fireborn also have a pretty large foot print (120X80). Plus the foot print is a double edged sword, because the large footprint allows more models to be in base contact for the S4 auto-hits. I agree that its frenzy can definitely be used against it. Which from a balance perspective is a good thing, as it does need to have some weaknesses. It is in this chaff game where the game will be played and it will come down to generalship. We can also field chaff and we also have chaff removal tools. The Destroyer's massive 18" march will also help in this regard, is it makes the chaff game more difficult since it can so easily traverse the battlefield. Forced charges, while potentially problematic, are still relatively uncommon. Even on its own, leadership 8 is decent, and if it is in range of the general & BSB (during the early stages of the game) it should not be a problem at all. The main issue is the forced overrun, which makes it easier to lead astray than the Fireborn. However the Fireborn can also be slowed down via chaff (just not to the same extent) and they are only movement 6. The question is, does the presence of frenzy completely nullify all the many advantages the Destroyer enjoys over the Fireborn? Other great units in the game also have Frenzy and can still function quite well. Who would argue that WoC Skullcrushers are not a super potent unit? And Skullcrushers belong to an army with far less shooting than the LoA has.

All internet hearsay, I've never played with or against either....yet. This is what I have been hearing as well. People really fear the Destroyer, but they don't feel the same about the Fireborn. The Fireborn can do well against a limited selection of targets, but the Destroyer can cause havoc on just about every unit in the game, barring a few exceptions (i.e. dragonhelm, dragonbane gem, etc.). Nothing in the LoA army can consistently deliver the Destroyer's level of damage in close combat.

Oh yeah you're right. Don't know where I got that from, was looking at the rules the other day Good job really or their damage output would not be high enough I personally prefer BC purely because of their mobility

On chaos dwarfs.com fireborns have pretty good reviews and destroyer pretty mediocre. I've seen the opposite. sgu97bjd conducted a survey over on the Chaos-Dwarfs forum and the Destroyer was rated much higher than the Fireborn. In fact, the Destroyer had the second highest score in the entire CD army, right after the Magma Cannon. The Fireborn received one of the lowest ratings... Lords Chaos Dwarf Sorcerer Prophet 3.36 (91%) Heros Chaos Dwarf Infernal Castellan 3.43 (94%) Chaos Dwarf Deamonsmith Sorcerer 3.36 (84%) Bull Centaur Taur'ruk 3.21 (92%) Hobgoblin Khan 3.00 (89%) Character Mounts Bale Taurus 3.21 (92%) Great Taurus 3.15 (89%) Giant Wolf (CD) 3.15 (93%) Lammasu 2.62 (75%) Core Hobgoblin Cutthroats 2.93 (98%) Chaos Dwarf Infernal Guard 2.64 (91%) Special Magma Cannon 4.50 (90%) Deathshrieker Rocket Launcher 3.93 (84%) Iron Daemon 2.71 (88%) Bull Centaur Renders 2.64 (91%) K'daii Fireborn 2.57 (94%) Chaos Dwarf Infernal Ironsworn 1.64 (91%) Rare K'daii Destroyer 4.43 (80%) Hellcannon (CD) 4.14 (86%) Hobgoblin Wolf Raiders 2.93 (84%) Dreadquake Mortar 2.71 (77%) Chaos Seige Giant 2.00 (89%) Mind you, I believe it was only based on 14 votes, but still. To your point, I have heard some grumblings on the Destroyer over on the CD website, but I've heard its praises sung far more often.

Well I think neither compare at all in power level of skull crushers I would compare fireborns to trolls but will high LD. I am talking about big footprint in combination with frenzy. It super easy to make it overrun into opposite way. And when you have 325p sunk into one monster it will get a lot of attention. I see no good anti chaff unit in CD except maybe magic fireballs. Against a player with little shaft or low implementation of chaff and no magic cannons the destroyer will be great though. But yes I face OnG, Skaven and Dwarfs a lot I just don’t praise a unit that expensive and only works 50% of the matches. Maybe I have missed something and need to go back and field or more again. But also I play low point games. Skullcrushers are definitely pretty damn powerful. I think the flaming attacks of the Destroyer hold it back a bit, otherwise a conversation could be had between the two. Both units can devastate nearly everything in the game. The Destroyer is of course far more vulnerable to poison. However, the point still remains, Skullcrushers suffer from Frenzy just as the Destroyer does, yet they are always viewed as a highly potent and dangerous unit. I definitely agree with you that the Frenzy rule can really hurt the Destroyer, but it is something that can be countered and controlled to some degree or another. Also I think that the reason it garners so much attention is that it is so very dangerous. Fireborn have to pick their combats far more carefully, because they can come out on the losing end much more easily and crumble away to nothing. On the other hand, it is pretty difficult to beat the Destroyer in combat and have it crumble (barring poison or 2+ ward save vs. flaming). As far as anti-chaff goes, we also have Fireglaives, Hobgolbin bows and Bull Centaur Renders. Plus chaff of our own.

Well when was the poll? Destroyer usel to be unvulnerable with needing 7(pretty hard on a d6) to wound with the -1 to wound. How much have you field it? The poll results were posted on the Chaos-Dwarf forum on 07-14-2013. I speculate that it would have been compiled in the weeks or at worst months leading up to that date. In any event, that change wouldn't effect its susceptibility to being Frenzy baited. Even as the rules currently stand, it is pretty hard to wound. I hope to build up a Chaos Dwarf army soon, so I have not yet fielded it. However, I have fielded other things with frenzy (Skullcrushers, Ripperdactyls, Ramhotep, etc.), so the principle is the same. Aside from its frenzy drawbacks and flaming attacks its rules and stats are pretty insane. It matches up to most things very effectively.
