So is this a mixed unit? What happens if you kill all of one kind, will all excess wounds be removed or carry over to the other kind? Let’s say my witch elves is only in base contact with squids but to way more wounds then the number of squigs will it carry over to herders or are they extra wounds lost? If unit flees with only herders will it still explode? I think it is: No to mixed No to to carry over And yes to explode

I think it is: No to mixed No to to carry over And yes to explode it's a mixed unit of infantry. if you kill all herders with squigs left, they explode. The wounds won't carry over to herders. Just herders fleeing will explode. Further points... The squigs are optional. Where you position herders/squigs in the unit, is upto you. I.e. 30 squigs in hoard formation, with 9 herders in the front rank and 1 at the back. This will mean anything fighting you (elves?) have to kill the goblins first, before they can touch the squigs...

- If anything, mixed units consist of models with different troop types (excluding characters), but both the Herders and the Cave Squigs have the troop type infantry. However, as has become apparent in a previous thread, the term "mixed unit" is not really part of the general Warhammer register - it is only used to denote Skink Cohorts and specific Skaven units, as part of their special rules.
- Excess wounds will not carry over, since the Squig Herd special rule specifies that: "all casualties are taken by removing models of the appropriate type."
- Somewhat counterintuitively to its name, the "Squigs Go Wild" special rule does not provide an exemption as such for a Squig Herd unit consisting only of Herders. Therefore, such a unit will still be subject to "Squigs Go Wild".
To add: for those that cannot stomach the counterintuitiveness: one could perhaps argue that there is an implied exemption, as the rule states "If the unit flees... the squigs go wild" and therefore you need at least one squig in the unit.
