Maybe I'm thinking about last edition but I swore these guys (taken as a rare choice) were skirmishers. Looking at the book it says nothing of skirmishing...I think I've been playing them wrong, maybe the 2 times I've ever fielded a unit of wraiths.

Well I am not sure personally, I read online they are skirmishers. Read one thing about them not being skirmishers anymore, not sure why.
Does the book not have it you say? Well maybe it was in a white dwarf issue that made them skirmishers? Like the issue that allowed them to be heroes?
Interestingly I just found out what the ninth age is. I just thought that was your guys term for AoS. There was a patch update for T9thAge that made wraiths skirmishers.

It seems like 9th Age gets an update every time somebody is like "ooh I have an idea!" I couldn't possibly pay attention to something that isn't ever going to be complete...constantly being revised.

Wraith where indeed skirmisher in 7th, but not in 8th. I too played them wrongly once in 8th as I very rarely use them and I had a movement tray for them from 7th. If only they where a good choice, I love that unit but are so crap (and I have so many models)

First chance I get, I'm going to trot out that 525 point unit. YOLO.

Isn't it better then, that they aren't skirmishers? Since they are ethereal that is there biggest defense I don't see skirmishers as helping them actually hindering them since skirmishers prevent disruption and do not benefit from rank bonus and lose easier to larger units based off combat resolution.
What are cairn wraiths purpose though? I have faced VC only twice and never seen wraiths used.

I use a single wraith on the regular and it has a few uses. First, I can launch one out there with its 6in move and engage war machines, small snooty units, and light cav/war beasts. I will say that for an empire, dwarf, or war machine heavy green skin player to see a lone wraith cruising around their backfield is a tough thing to deal with. I might also keep one in the front rank of some zombies or skeletons, just to gut out a few kills and balance out a combat res that usually tips against me quickly.
Now talking about an expensive unit of these dudes...I have no idea. One thing I do know is that most armies have access to a sig spell with a d6 Magic missile. Wraiths won't like that guy very much. With a march move of 12, I feel like I can close the gap quickly...I'm going to have to run a few rest scenarios to see what they can do.

Scroll of shielding would a good thing to bring along to help protect them, they'll surely get some attention from the enemy's wizards. You can't dispel everything, so the scroll can come in handy.

Right. This would be a stretch for me as I am known for never taking a scroll of anything. Even when I know I'm about to get face stomped by magic... I stubbornly take it.

It's still in development. There are two more update cycles left before the game is frozen (early April) for ETC and then there will only be 'emergency' changes until after the ETC.
