My opponent has 5 characters in the front row and 5 rank and file troops in the second row. I attack him in the rear and have 24 attacks. How do we resolve this? Let's say I hit 12. Do I roll to wound against the r&f troops and ignore the characters? If I get 10 wounds, do any of those reach the characters?

You attack the RnF only. Wounds do not carry over from units to characters, or vice versa. Extra wounds are wasted. But if you had models with different initiative values you'd be able to kill off the RnF and then hit the characters.
Your opponent could also have used the Make Way rule to get the characters in combat. I'm assuming he didn't want to.

Nope, he didn't want that. So I can have 89 attacks but if I am only in base contact with the r&f, I can only hit them? That blows like a magic blowpipe...

If you think about it, that unit would likely break. Even Dwarves would need snake eyes: leadership 10 minus 1 for the charge, two for fighting to the rear, 5 from the wounds.

My opponent excels in two things: throwing two sixes when casting a spell and throwing two ones when making a break test :-)
