Hi all, tomorrow we will play our second game. My opponent/partner insisted that we not increase our points while I proposed to increase to 1500 points. Ok, we also plan to not change the factions, so it will be DoC vs. VC again. Lists will be modified, I plan to bring something along the following lines:
Necromancer Lvl 2 with Book of Arkhan [125pts], General
Wight King, BSB, Enchanted Shield, Luckstone [120pts]
Core
5 Dire Wolves [40pts] 24 Skeleton Warriors, Champion, Musician, Standard Bearer [150pts] 22 Zombies with Standard Bearer & Musician [68pts]
Special
22 Grave Guard with Shields and FC [262pts]
Rare Terrorgheist [225pts]
Almost the same core as before, but I do not see what I could sensibly change. Crypt Ghouls are very expensive at the small size of the game. I am undecided about the Terrorgheist. With some small adjustments, I could fit in 6 Crypt Horrors again instead of the TG, but I want to give other units a chance, too. So the CH, even though I rate them to be an extremely strong unit for their points, are out for tomorrow. Another tempting alternative that I might want to try out is the Black Coach. This would free enough points to cram in a War Banner for the GG at the cost of one model or a musician, but I am less than thrilled that the Evocation of Death chart is partly neutralized by the fact that I play against DoC, where Killing Blow and Ethereal will simply not matter. A plus for the Coach is that it is Vampiric, which may save a lot of points in the case of an untimely demise of the Necromancer.
Any recommendations?
Thank you in advance!

BSB is generally a waste of time for Undead imo. 1 less model crumbling.. for half a Banner of the Barrows/Spirit Host etc.. no thanks. Could pinch yourself a few points there

How big a battlefield are you using? If it's a full 6' x 4' one, the Terrorgheist should do well -- their base size can make them hard to place in a smaller battlefield, or a big one that is loaded up with scenery or units. For the sake if trying it out, I'd stick with the Terrorgheist over the Crypt Horrors. It's easy to get stuck in a rut with army selections by sticking with what's worked before - with a new army you should be shaking things up and trying out new combos.
Agreed with Horace that the BSB upgrade is unnecessary. You could drop the Wight King altogether - he doesn't add much to this list (though the various Wight King models are ace). Grave Guard love Banner of the Barrows; that's well worth getting for them.

Thank you, guys! I stuck with the Terrorgheist, as I was already playing when your answers came in. The Terrorgheist was a threat that the daemons had no answer to. It even felt a little OP in the end: flank charging, screaming in the shooting phase, regular attacks plus thunderstomp, all while having T6. At this game size and without artillery, limited space or magic keeping it in check, it is certainly powerful. I'll write up report again with pictures.
I wanted to include the Wight King as the BSB as it functions like a War banner for 10 less points. Your points about him are valid, though. His attacks never did much, when I lost combats, the saved model did nothing for me. A few times, the additional CR made me draw and win due to musician. Although, losing by one would also not have changed much. Certainly, the loss of the Necromacer to a failed LD test in my last game pushed me to have a LD re-roll, i.e. BSB. Also, the Wight King is tough with T5 and W3 and made my opponent waste some attacks on him. When we upgrade to higher points values and possibly include Lords, I may trust my LD a bit more again. During setup and the whole game I was very nervous about the army depending on the unlife of the naked T3 W2 Necromancer, again I hope that this will feel better when Vampire Lords become available. In hindsight, maybe the Banner of the Barrows and an additional unit of Dire Wolves or Spirit Hosts would have been better than the BSB, having more units would have been helpful in some situations. I will write up the report on Saturday or Sunday, stay tuned...

I think if you are running a WK in a unit of Black Knights, the BSB becomes a little more worth it. WK are resilient and hit with KB so they are decent for their points and make good BSB, but in low point games it's a big chunk of your points
