Hey there
I was wondering if I could get some advice/guidance on putting a VC army list together. I haven't played fantasy at all as I only started the hobby by playing AoS. However like lots of others I have played the total war games and just loved armies, heroes etc.
I will only be playing with friends (2/2.5k points) to take a break from other game systems. I want to include Vlad and Isabella Von Carstein in the list but not sure where to go next.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Vlad is a bit of a beast but between him and Isabella, you are already in for 670 points, which is a big chunk.
Is there anything that you particularly want to include?
For core you are stuck between a series of poorish choices, so spend up to the minimum on what you want:
Zombies & Skeletons basically only function as tar-pits to hold units in place. You will need to be casting Invocation to make them last. Ghouls have a bit more damage output but are squishy and more expensive. Dire Wolves are useful annoyance units so probably worth taking a unit or 2.
Special is more interesting, you have some stuff that actually can kill things and also have some nice MI to choose from: Black Knights & Grave Guard are your go to killing-things units really. Vargheists/Crypt Horrors offer you some Monstrous Infantry which are both good, at different ends of the killings-things/tough spectrum. Spirit Hosts/Hexwraiths offer you an Ethereal option. They can play havoc with unprepared opponents or if engaged with the right things. Bats/Corpse Carts add a bit of flavour if you are wanting to try something specific with them. Ie. Corpse carts in a never-ending-Zombie-horde list.
Rare is also strong with good choices pretty much across the board: Blood Knights - super expensive but super elite cavalry. They will get shot if not looked after. Varguhlf - Regenerating M8 monster which puts out a lot of damage Terrogheist - Flying monster with a lovely scream attack. Armoured troops dislike it. Black Coach - Slightly odd chariot which can end up Ethereal and Flying. Can be really good, helped by the fact it's tough and has a 4++ Wraiths - More Ethereal stuff. I'm not sure how well they work as a unit - I will be experimenting with them shortly Mortis Engine - Never used it but I think they are well(ish) regarded?
With VC you need to strike a balance between tarpitting with you garbage core units and also actually putting stuff down which will kill things. You will need a reasonable unit to put Vlad in because you don't want him dieing from combat res as people kill the rubbish around him.
I don't personally believe in Battle Standards for VC, take one if you really want, they are occasionally worth it in Black Knight units

Hmm I don't really have anything else in particular in mind but based on your really useful information maybe put a list together with the follow units:-
Vlad Isabella Necromancer or vampire lord? Dire Wolves Skeletons Grave Guard Black Coach Terrorghiest
I don't how much of each unit I would need but if you have any recommendations that would be great.

Have you read this thread? eefl.freeforums.net/thread/1100/vampire-counts-tactics One of the later posts has a guide to putting together some example armies. The big question is - do you have any models yet? And if not, are there any particular ones you like the look of / think are cool? And are you comfortable with buying stuff for inflated prices off eBay or using non-GW models? Because there's less and less of the old Vampire Counts range available as the years go by.
