Hey all my mate wants to use kanarak from DoC. He is unsure about his ambusher rule interaction with units. Does his ambusher rule mean he cannot deploy normally? And does his rule confer over to the unit he deploys with? Or do you have to pay the upgrade to confer ambushers onto khorne flesh hounds in order for him to join it?
Thanks

The Ambushers special rule is not optional, but mandatory (BRB p. 79): "A unit with the Ambushers rule does not deploy at the start of the battle. Instead,..." etc. Now, the Ambushers special rule does not specifically state that it confers from a character to a unit(and vice versa). And as specified by BRB p. 100: "Unless otherwise noted in the text of the rule itself, a special rule applying only to a character does not apply to the unit, and vice versa." Hence, since Karanak must be deployed following the Ambushers special rule, he can only be deployed on his own or as part of a unit that has the Ambushers special rule itself, and you need to pay for the upgrade.

For the sake of completeness: the same applies to the other deployment special rules, i.e. Scouts and Vanguard.
Scouts is even given as an example of the rule quoted above (BRB p. 100): "Unless otherwise noted in the text of the rule itself, a special rule applying only to a character does not apply to the unit, and vice versa. Most special rules are there to represent specific skills or powers — you couldn't learn to shoot a longbow by standing next to someone who could, so why would you become able to perform a Killing Blow, deploy as a Scout, and so on?"
And regarding Vanguard, there is this rather superfluous FAQ (BRB Official Update Version 1.9, p. 10):
Q: If a character is deployed as part of a unit with the Vanguard special rule, can that unit still make its Vanguard move? (p79).
A: If the character in question has the Vanguard special rule as well, then yes, they may. Otherwise, no, the character’s presence prevents the unit from using Vanguard.
Obviously, that also works vice versa.
