If you don't want to target a character or a champion can you cast Gehenna's Golden Hounds into a unit and target rank and file model (thereby spilling wounds into the unit and potentially killing multiple models)?
The spell dictates that you choose a "single enemy model within range", but I think you could simply target a single R&F model and if that model dies, then leftover wounds would spill into the unit as normal.
Basically, is there anything preventing you from using the spell as a shorter range (or higher casting cost) second copy of Searing Doom? I don't see why not, but I was curious as to how others play it.

You can certainly target a rank and file model. But since the spell doesn't say hit are distributed as per shooting, I believe all hits will only wound the single model targeted.

Somewhat ironically if you target a character model, each successful "look out sir" roll would bounce a wound into a different rank and file model. Very likely killing more models than if you targeted a single rank and file model.

What thegoat says. BRB p. 36: "Many spells inflict hits or wounds on your enemies — you can find out how to resolve these on page 40 of the Shooting Phase." [or rather p. 40 and following.] BRB p. 42 (Resolving Unusual Attacks): "There are several circumstances in Warhammer that call upon you to inflict hits upon an enemy — spells being an obvious example (the Fireball spell causes D6 Strength 4 hits on an enemy unit), as well as things like the Impact Hits made by a charging chariot (covered in the Special Rules chapter). Such hits are resolved using steps 4, 5 and 6 of the rules for shooting attacks. BRB p. 45: "For every model that fails its save the target unit suffers an unsaved wound (any saves that were not possible because the modifier was too high also count as having been failed)." Since, in this particular case, only a single model (rather than a unit) is hit and thus can suffer an unsaved wound, only that single model can be removed.

Interesting. Thanks Gents!
A pretty poor spell then; with its potential usefulness much more limited to multi-wound models.
