I just want to check if I got the rules right.... "Flying cavalry" is not a troop type, but a special rule, like "fast cavalry". I.e. putting a character on a flying mount will (usually) only make him "monstrous cavalry" as long as the mount doesn't explicitly grant the "flying cavalry" special rule. Examples: Warhawk Riders are "monstrous cavalry" and have the special rule "flying cavalry" and can thus fire their bows after marching. A Wood Elf character riding a Great Eagle is only "monstrous cavalry" lacking the special rule "flying cavalry" and is therefore not able to fire his bow after marching. A Dwarf Gyrocopter is only special and therefore equally ...hampered as the Wood Elf character on his Great Eagle. I guess I shouldn't expect too much in-game logic. And the confirmation being special isn't necessarily a good thing

That is generally correct, although the troop type of a Gyrocopter is Unique, not special. Granted, all units are all unique and special in their own way, and should get brownie points just for that....

Thanks for the confirmation.
I only have the German version of the Dwarf armybook available, so sorry for the inaccuracy. But in this context I think unique and special are interchangeable.

Well, the Gyrocopter is both "unique" and "special," but the two are not interchangeable. "Unique" (Einzigartig in the German version) refers to the troop type, while "special" (Eliteeinheit in the German version) refers to the unit category.
