OK, this will expose my ignorance hugely, but.... I JUST read the rule about flaming attacks causing fear in cavalry (after years of play....) and want to be sure I understand: "Enemies with Flaming Attacks cause Fear in war beasts, cavalry and chariots." Am I correct that the mount and rider are subject to fear? So specifically, knights AND their horses will suffer the effects of fear rather than just the horses? But presumably you use the rider's LD stat, as usual. Just trying to figure out what makes the most sense... and failing. Thanks in advance!

In essence, you are correct, but "war beasts, cavalry and chariots" refers to the troop type, and thus always includes rider & mount (unless specifically stated otherwise). Note that some spells are Flaming Attacks, and any Wizard that has such a spell will cause Fear in the aforementioned troop types. For instance, a Fire Wizard will always cause Fear, because all the spells of the Lore of Fire are Flaming Attacks. However, a spell that grants the Flaming Attacks special rule, but is not a Flaming Attack itself (like Soulfire of a Warrior Priest), will not cause Fear.
BRB Official Update Version 1.9, p. 9: Q: Do all forms of Flaming Attacks cause Fear in war beasts, cavalry and chariots? (p69)
A: Yes, any model that has a Flaming Attack will cause Fear. This includes unit upgrades, models that only have ranged flaming attacks and even Wizards with spells that cause Flaming Attacks.

This is one of those rules no-one ever remembers, myself included.

It's a great rule, makes Irondrakes even more terrifying to face. With the right wrangling you can really tip the scales in your favour when using flaming attacks, though beware characters with ward saves versus flaming attacks. That lovely Hellfire sword is pretty useless when someone has the 10 point dragon helm.

Awesome, thanks guys. Planning on a "Bring your nastiest list" against an Empire player who will certainly bring nothing but cavalry and steam tanks - as a Dwarf player I have only a few ways to get flaming attacks, but it's worth a shot (ironic, because the rest of my strategy involves a LOT of shot). Reading the excerpt posted, the Fiery Ring of Thori (s4 flaming breath weapon) would cause fear just by being held - not only when used... right??

That is correct - as long as he has not actually used it, since he can use it only once.

Or you could take the rune that grants flaming attacks/breath weapon.

Oh I'm planning to bring every flaming attack I cam get my hands on - thank you! On that note, how would flaming ranged attacks work? Say, a breath weapon, or Irondrake fire?

Well, Fear has no effect whatsoever in the Shooting phase. However, FA have other effects, which also affect ranged attacks: - reroll failed To Wound rolls when shooting at or assaulting a building - double unsaved wounds of models with the Flammable special rule - prevent Regeneration
Of course, not that useful against Empire armies.
