Indirect Fire doesn't need line of sight, but otherwise follows the rules for shooting.
Would it have to be within the "vision arc" of the model?
I always played it that it's within the vision arc, but you just don't have to be able to draw LoS to it. A mate of mine says it doesn't, but I still lean towards having to be within the vision arc of the model as normal.
Some models fire with the same rules as stone throwers (dwarf Cinderblast Bombs) or may make a stone thrower shooting attack (Cygor), I feel that it'd be very awkward to shoot behind you while still maintaining your facing somewhere else.
How have you guys played with it?

Stone throwers, being war machines, can pivot before firing, and thus have de facto a 360 degree field of view. Note also that war machines normally do not have bases, and there is simply no way to determine their forward arc. Anything that fires like a stone thrower, but is not a war machine itself, does not get the pivot.

If you "fire like a stone thrower", surely you do just that (inclusive of a free pivot)?
Else, if you can "fire like a cannon/stone thrower" and you're not a war machine - you'd be able to stand and shoot against a charge 😂

No. The free pivot is specifically stated for the troop type "war machine," and this actually happens "before firing." It is not part of the firing rules. If you fire like a cannon/stone thrower, you are still not able to S&S, because that is not just tied to the troop type, but also to the weapon system. As BRB p. 109 (updated) specifically states: "Unless specified otherwise, all weapons in this section (and all other weapons mounted on war machines) have the Move or Fire and Slow to Fire special rules."
