This is a personal ranking of the 16 warhammer armies (inc CD) based on models/lore/rules/have I ever collected them etc. From my experiences in over 30 years of warhammering. Some of my opinions may be controversial - especially when I get to slagging off some very popular armies further down ;-)
1. Chaos warriors of course! Evil armoured warriors in 5 different flavours, what’s not to like? Bought 3 of them in my first ever citadel purchase and I’ve got 3 painted armies of them now. Played them almost exclusively from late 7th thru the life of 8th.
2. Beastmen. Love those angry goats and especially the Minos. Had an army since 1998.
3. Dark Elves. The best elves like Sedge said recently. Can’t argue with those iconic fantasy elements that have been around since the start: riding lizards, repeater crossbows and witch elves. Had a decent size painted army in 6th but sold it off later because of how boring the paint job was - pale skin, black hair, dark blue robes. Got an unpainted collection ready for when I come up with a paint scheme worthy of them. Blue skin, white hair, red armour?
4. Skaven. Had a half painted army in 5th I got rid of later because there were too many fugly 90s models in it and not enough gorgeous Jes Goodwin metal originals. Those 80s models plus the lore - short lived manic, treacherous, cowardly, vicious rats in countless hordes of swarming up from beneath the cities of men - is magic. Unique to warhammer and a genius creation. Gaming wise I’m perennially disappointed by their reliance on often OP magic and skryre toys rather than frothing hordes of rats to get things done.
5. Daemons of chaos. A Chaos army so they are up here and I’ve played them in 8th and own a bunch but still a bit of a new fangled army to me (were they in Ravening Hordes or Warhammer Armies? No they were not.)
6. Dwarfs. Got a huge painted army but despite that I’m not a massive dwarf fanboy (not to the level of the Bugmans crowd - no offence to any that are!). I sometimes wonder how I ended up with 350 painted models. Stubbornly trying and usually failing to make umpteen tournament list variations work through half the 00s probably. That and I love slayers. And they are quick and easy to paint.
7. Wood elves. A little out of love with these at the mo but had a fully painted army at the start of 6th and again in mid 7th. Still have a collection of models. Like the celtic/elven barbarian feel. Wardancers and warhawks are cool.
8. Bretonnia. High medieval France married to the Arthurian myth. Regiments of knight in shining armour. When it comes to good guy humans I deffo prefer these guys to the Empire. Had a large painted army in 5th ed but later sold it off. It wasn’t up to my later painting standard and the 6th ed book introduced a bunch of new units I didn’t have. Regret selling it now!
9. High elves. Was seriously tempted to collect them once in 5th. The Eldroth cavalry Prince model and warmaster silver helms are amongst my favourite models of all time. Army never quite caught my imagination though.
10. Empire. Pretty neutral about these for such a core warhammer army. Played with them a few times, played against them loads. Never really tempted to collect them.
11. Orcs and Goblins. My best mate and most regular oppo’s number one army since like 1987. So never tempted to collect them. Playing against them feels like warhammer. Always up for a game with these guys.
12. Tomb kings. The cool undead army. Always liked skeletons as a fantasy trope. War statues as a concept is a bit lame when you stop and think about it. Never tempted to collect TKs for WFB but I have them for warmaster.
13. VC. If these were necromantic undead they’d be much higher. Never collected more than a handful of skellies. Played against them loads. Never really liked the gameplay of super powerful characters and crud troops. Oh and skeletons and ghosts are cool but vampires are LAME. Chaos is SO much cooler. There I’ve said it.
14. Lizardmen. Here we go, rant time. Hate them. Hate skinks. Hate the slann. Hate saurus cowboys. 6th Ed auto hit salamanders and the Super OP charm of the jaguar warrior were the bane of my beasts and dwarfs’ lives. Dinos should be cool but the only genuinely good model was the original metal carnosaur. Their lore is lame, they should be an inhuman cold blooded evil empire bent on conquering the lands of men like fighting fantasy lizardmen (yes as you can see from my top 5 above I like bad guy armies).
15. Ogres. No bone to pick with these guys just still feel quite new to me and still a bit lacking in identity and history (only 2 wfb army books).
16. Chaos dwarfs. Barely played against them. Don’t like big hats. Tamurkhan list is very limited.
There’s my ranking, what’s yours?
