I mean, if I want to assassinate an enemy's character, realistically I don't really need to keep challenging until my opponent says it's his turn, right?
Say I have Karl Franz in the front row and successfully charge the enemy and I am in base-contact, I can select the enemy hero or lord of my choice in his base contact and quasi-challenge through my regular attack.
There's no "look out sir!" for melee as far as I could tell.
Or is there a flaw in my reasoning?

They can challenge you in your turn, however to stop you targeting attacks.

colonelburton: Yes. And no, there is no LoS! in melee. On a side note: that is one of the problems with the Speculum. It has been nerfed in several ways, one of which is that you must use it in a challenge.

It has been nerfed in several ways, one of which is that you must use it in a challenge. Yes, human champions only have STI 3 each and 2 AT, which sucks but since they only have one wound, they will usually take a licking in the match. Luckily, WS is not traded. For one, this is why the Speculum carrier needs to be stacked with bonus items (additional AT from swords is not traded for example) and preferably, a spell or Battle Prayer, too. For another thing, you will often encounter champions and models that are over 4 on STIA

I think of challenges less of a tool to help me assassinate an enemy character, as you phrased, and more of a tool to restrict the target of the opponent's (probably magically enhanced) attacks.
