I had an unusual situation come up this weekend.
Buddy of mine and I were playing, some close combat situations ensued… need help with this one.
Unit of Rat Ogres 3 wide, Skweel Gnawtooth in the front rank as me must be, but on the side (right side) because he is 20x20 and the Rat Ogres are 40x40.
This unit gets into a frontal charge with a Treeman who they fail to kill.
Next round, Treekin (front) and Dryads (flank) charge. The treekin are in the front no issues.
The dryads are in question. They charge the flank that Skweel is positioned as he is, much like any other none base size conforming character would be. How do we treat the response back? When the dryads charge in, do the Rat Ogres shuffle weirdly to the side so they are half behind Skweel and half behind the front rank? Or are they not able to strike the dryads at all? And if they move, do the remaining pack masters move as well?
It threw us for a loop because of the weird base size situation.
Need some rules help here thanks.

“INCOMPLETE RANKS Strange gaps where models are missing from a rank do not prevent warriors from fighting. If a unit is fighting to its flank, the models in the incomplete rank are moved into contact with the enemy, there to fight and be fought normally. If the unit is fighting to its rear (or fighting to both flanks) some enemy models might not end up in base contact because of the models in the incomplete rear rank. In this specific situation, the models can fight across the gap, even if not physically in base-to-base contact. In reality, the chargers would not have stopped one step away from the enemy and would have moved in to continue the fight – treat these models as being in base contact with the enemy. ” Excerpt From Warhammer: Rulebook (Interactive Edition) Games Workshop books.apple.com/us/book/warhammer-rulebook-interactive-edition/id781707568This material may be protected by copyright.

Models of different awkward base sizes than the unit and thus cannot align with the unit are not part of the ranks in a unit. Does that change this in anyway?

What rahotep75 says. Because of the colliding footprint, "the character is ignored when working out the number of ranks in the unit and if it counts as a horde" (BRB p. 98). That is about it. Otherwise, it is a clear example of: "Strange gaps where models are missing from a rank do not prevent warriors from fighting."
