Just want to make sure I got this right. Some units are allowed to carry magic banners, as detailed in their army list entry. A Magic Standard can only be carried by a standard bearer, as shown in the army list in the relevant Warhammer Armies book. The only character permitted to carry a Magic Standard is the army's Battle Standard Bearer. An Inner Circle Knight unit with a standard bearer may have a magic standard worth up to 50 points Does this mean I can either have a BSB Character with a Standard or a simple standard bearer with a Standard. But not both, and certainly not more than 50 points? BattleScribe allows for two standards because it doesn't know the BSB is going to go into the Knightly's so there's no error message obviously.

They can both take magic banners. BSB is a character. The unit standard bearer isn't a character for the purposes of that rule. BSB also has no points limit on how much it can spend on a magic banner. BattleScribe isn't wrong in this instance.

So theoretically I can take a Cavalry unit with BSB that has both the Banner of Eternal Flame as well as the Steel Standard?

Yes, but the main point of taking a BSB are the Hold Your Ground/Hold the Line special rule. As I said before: almost all our characters (in particular the BSB) have a supporting role, for which they need to survive. I would rather give him a magic sword and/or ward than a magic standard.

Also, remember when counting combat res, you can count 1 regular unit standard AND 1 BSB.
Explained differently: No matter how many units you have in a single combat, you can only count one of the unit standards for combat res. The BSB being in the combat allows you to count the Battle Standard as well, giving you +2 combat res instead of just +1.
