Hey so I am unsure if I am just crazy but we may need an faq to fix how the lance rule works.
I am specifically referring to the part "The lance may only be wielded on the turn a unit charges. In subsequent turns (of if the model did not charge) they must use a hand weapon instead." Could this not be taken as meaning the lance can only be used once? Since a charge on turn 4 is still in a subsequent turn to whatever turn you previously charged.
I understand the rule is supposed to let you charge, drop the lance and continue fighting with a hand weapon. However the page that does reference lances as a weapon which you could drop after a charge refers to combats as rounds not turns. Is this how its supposed to interact or is there some weird wording issue going on here?
another somewhat related question
How would this work with following a unit after they gave ground or fall back in good order, where in both cases you count as charging? Would you still get to fight with the lance on the next turns combat phase or would you lose it because the turn would be subsequent to the one you charged in?
I hope this all made sense, I think it would be unwise to make lances a one use weapon like this. Its also confusing when who ever wrote the fluff text described the lance as breaking after the charge which implies thats what they were trying to go for.

Historically in Warhammer Fantasy Battles, you've been able to use a lance any time you charge, not just the first time you do. I'd be surprised if this weren't the intended use of lances in The Old World, but yeah, this rulebook leaves quite a few things ambiguous, and some of the wording that's intending to be just flavorful text can muddle the intended interpretation of the rules. Or I've been using lances the wrong way for my entire Warhammer career.
As for Following Up a unit that Gave Ground, that movement does NOT count as charging. Pursuing a unit that Fell Back in Good Order counts as a charge.

There is no way in which the wording on the Lance suggests it's one use only.

Flails however, they lose the Strength bonus after the first round, but keep the AP2 💪

An entirely new combat on a later turn, would qualify as a subsequent turn. But it is referring to subsequent turns of the same combat.

It's not listed as single use. 😎
