Much appreciated, guys! Looking forward to see some of your warriors, @ryryak ! rockcity , in fact I like the 7th ed state troops better. I love the Perry brothers' work, but in my view, the 6th ed state troops has to be some of their worst. Pretty rough sculpting (and sometimes casting) if you ask me, almost like it was rushed? For example the handgunner to the right here has a nasty mold line that ruins the face completely (strategically turned away from the camera here . Not at all on par with their beautiful Empire stuff from 4th ed that was cast in metal. However, building an 8th ed army from those models is difficult and expensive. So I use mainly 7th ed state troops even if they are not perfect either. I *think*, however, that the bare feet are supposed to tie into the other religious/superstitious details like scrolls, skulls, hourglasses etc., as I believe that walking barefeet was a form of penitence. Then I have this dream of one day fielding a big block of 40-50 4th ed single-pose plastic halberdiers... One day...

to be fair, the gunner on the right is single piece from the 6th ed starter set. The regular multi-piece plastic Perrys from the same time are still my favorite state troopers. (admittedly the handgun version of that set is the dodgiest of the weapon options).
nice paint jobs!

Exactly like that, haha, nice work! Naitsabes: Matter of taste of course, but I'm not that fond of the 6th ed multipart regiment either, for example compared to the great militia kit, which is another multipart box from around the same time (or was it even earlier?). Then there are some great historical ranges out there, that would probably beat both 6th and 7th ed troops anyway.

Yeah I'd agree that the quality of the newer plastics is undeniably a few steps up. Thanks for the barefoot thing I think that is an explanation that probably fits and does placate that itch to a degree . The 7th ones are much more dynamic. I just have a place in my heart for the old ones warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php/topic,41516.0.html ^ Link to a great thread on Empire forum from 2012 with folks showing off their state troops. A fair amount of pictures.

I just have a place in my heart for the old ones I totally get it! Thinking about this I realise that my taste in minis is fairly inconsistent overall, a mix of nostalgia, love of classic concepts, new and shiny-impulses, etc.

No point discriminating against good models just because they are new. I have a perhaps nostalgic bias towards the 4th/5th models but even with that some of them were not great (I'm looking at you Shadow Warriors). The new plastics were vastly superior. Also you are correct, the plastic 4th Halberdiers were fantastic

More tasty snacks for the range of mutants and monstrosities on the other side of the table. In colourful wrapping and toothpicks included.

Sweet! I love "Shoeless Joe"! They look really great! Hochland, right? I just got 20 more Halberdiers in the mail today that I'm going to paint up as a "unit on loan" for my Middenheim force.
