I set up 6 - 1000 point armies (no mages) to do some simulated battles and walk through the rules.
In the 3 games I managed to play ogres beat dwarves and chaos and chaos beat dwarves. I rolled random and those are the armies that came up.
These are the questions that I encountered. (Where I was later able to locate an answer I added the reference)
*When engaged in the flank or rear can your unit reform to but the enemy into the front?
In my game one, two sabertusks engaged a unit of thunderers in the rear. The thunderers won the combat and the sabertusks held. I could not find that the thunderers could turn around.
*Is there a unit strength required to get disruption? Resolved US 5 pg 101
*Challenges one unit falls back does the challenge continue? Resolved from the FAQ it appears that the challenge would continue.
Monster infantry rules -This is pretty clear but I wanted to point it out. The rules say that you cannot have more characters in the front row than RnF. It also says that the cmd models cannot go to the 2nd row. Monster Infantry only needs three models to get a rank bonus however if you want to join a character you will need to run at least 4 wide or drop a cmd model. I would generally run my hero and a butcher in the same unit which means I need to go 5 wide or drop the bellower and run 4 wide.
Pg 207 Positioning Characters - When a character joins a unit they are placed in its front rank, displacing one or more rank and file models (not including command group models) to the rear rank as required, as shown in Fig 207.1. If the character’s base does not fit neatly within the unit’s ranks, position the model on the unit’s flank, adjacent to, and in base contact with, its front rank.
Pg 209 Too Many Characters: Unless a unit contains only a single rank, its fighting rank cannot contain more characters than it does rank and file models.
* Are Characters allowed to charge out of a unit? - I see nothing allowing this or stating that they cannot. I assume that they cannot?
* Does Restraining a pursuit allow for reform? Resolved Pg 156
Resolved Pg 156 Restrain & Reform Most units may attempt to ‘restrain and reform’, rather than making a follow up or pursuit move, by making a ‘Restraint’ test. To make a Restraint test, test against the unit’s Leadership characteristic. If this test is failed, the unit must either follow up or pursue. If this test is passed, the unit remains where it is and may make a free reform.
* How does the change of formation from marching column to open order happen? I used marching order to get triple march movement for my chaos marauders horsemen, They made a 24" movement. Next round I want to charge with them. Are they still in Marching column? How do I change them from that to open order? Is it just the formation they are in at the end of the movement? This means that a unit that is 30 models, 5 wide and 6 ranks can never declare a charge?
Pg 183 - Marching Column A unit that is deeper than it is wide (i.e., that has more models per file than per rank) is said to be in Marching Column. A Marching Column cannot claim a Rank Bonus and cannot make a charge move,
but may triple its Movement characteristic when Marching, as described on page 123.
* Two units are engaged in separate combats the first unit is defeated and breaks from combat causing panic in nearby friendly units. Does the other unit who has not fought yet have to take a panic test and when? Resolved Pg 160
Pg 160 No Need For Hysterics - In addition, a unit is not required to make a Panic test if: • It is making a Charge move. • It is engaged in combat. • It is already fleeing
*Also note due to this rule units charging no longer have to take a panic test for a stand and shoot reaction.
* Unit Strength of a bolt thrower- The table of Pg 105 says as starting wounds. The bolt thrower has 3, and there are also three crew so is it 3 or 6? Again I'm guessing it is three of the machine but how does that work with dwarven machines that can have an engineer
* Bolt throwers and additional ranks. In the past I seem to remember if the bolt thrower failed to kill the model in the first rank it would stop. (Maybe I remember incorrectly) Pg 203 -- Through and through rule - now the bolt thrower does a hit on each rank and if it wounds it does 2 wounds.
* Warmachines in combat - If the crew wins combat do they have test to restrain pursuit?
*Warmachine in combat - If they lose combat and give ground does the whole machine move 2" or just the crew?
Pg 197 says Note that a war machine that loses a round of combat may Fall Back in Good Order or Give Ground as normal.
