One unit at a time! My collection is small by some peoples standards here (~12k WoC, 4k Beastmen, 8k Skaven, 1k Ogres) but it's all about one unit at a time. When you're tired of painting a particular army, paint a unit (or three) of a different army. Sooner or later (sometimes it takes years before you come back, like my Beastmen currently) you'll get back to painting the original army.

Hey all,
High Elves 3k Bretonnia 2.5 k Skaven 4k
I at one point many years ago in 6th edition had a fully(!) painted (so-so but nonetheless) Nordland themed Empire force at 2k. Classic "moved away for school + folks moved" situation and perma lent it to friend.
I wasn't originally into the Skaven too much but they came with the 8th starter set. I have always loved the appeal of a horde army - but the extra effort required always seemed so daunting. After I expanded my collection past the basic starting stuff they really grew on me. I love their wackiness.

I've never tried it but I'm going to be dipping my skaven once I get around to painting them.
I bought them off a friend who was moving out of state and they've been just sitting in a box for a very long time.
Here's (in my head) how I see it going:
brown primer
airbrush skin
airbrush weapons
brush armor/clothing
dip.
I'm hoping to be able to crank these guys out pretty fast with this method; but who knows. Dipping is new to me so I don't know what to expect there.
(dipping is essentially a varnish/ink all rolled into one; you either brush it on or physically dip the model into the varnish, then shake/brush off as much as you're able then allow it to dry. It shades/seals the model all in one go!)

I do have a few Bretonnian models as well. I wasn't really counting those, I guess because I wasn't considering Bretonnia to really be '8th edition' you know? I have the most recent Bretonnia army book, 20 or so archers, 20 or so knights, the Green Knight, and I have an old (5th ed) Luoen Leoncouer on Hippogryph. What are your opinions about that old army book being able to function within 8th ed rules? Bretonnia have been my preferred army for a LONG time, and it's so depressing that other armies got all kinds of awesome new units and models, while the the Bretonni were forgotten. If the army can still function well within the 8th rules though, Bretonnia is my #1 army all the way, and I'll start painting up some of the models I have. Seeing boda317's models (http://eefl.freeforums.net/thread/324/prepping-battle-la-maisontaal?page=3&scrollTo=8297) has been very inspiring

My Bretonnian log is all about building a new army for 8th Brets. Boda plays EEFL Brets as well. His army is huge and very awesome. I plan to be done with my unit of pauper knights this weekend.

Well, the 6E (and last) Bret book works... sort of.
Being pretty much the only army that can multiple units of heavy cav with five ranks for less than ruinous cost is their primary saving grace in a Steadfast world. Alongside the Lance Formation - which gives them pretty hefty striking power on a very narrow frontage - they can combo-charge two or three Lances of knights into a target unit and stand a decent chance of breaking it.
So long as it's not more than 7(ish) ranks deep, anyway.
The wide variety of useful magic items helps too.
It doesn't really overcome their deficits, though. They lack variety in units, which makes their weak units (like Questing Knights) all the more painful. And pretty much everything they have is between ten and twenty-five overpriced relative to comparable units in new books.
But at least they're better off in 8E than they've been neutered to in T9A. T9A 'not-Bretonnians' suck MOOSE.

I like playing as the Brets but it just makes me sad when i read the Empire books and their core strength 4 knight possibilities. S4 Kotr were on my wishlist! I also would have loved T4 grail knights.
I do like some of the things they added to them in T9A. Crossbowmen - BS4 longbowmen possibilities. I will wait till they settle on ruleset before delving back into that however.

I've got one of every army, at least one unit of each option for each army. Mostly acquired through eBay, outlasting friends who donated their armies to me (4 armies this way), and in lieu of rent payments (another 4 or so this way). The vast majority is unpainted, however I do have some painted:
2500+ pts of Ogres 2000+ pts of Chaos Dwarfs 4000+ pts of Daemons 1000+ pts of Brets 2000+ pts of odds and ends (usually a unit I randomly paint -- Ellyrion Reavers, Pistoliers, Outriders, TK Archers, Tomb King, SSC, 10 Orc Boyz, other random stuff)

Ha, it will never be finished (paint-wise), nor do i intend to do it (I would be too stressed if otherwise!). I do have Gremlins for Malifaux, each option there too, and those guys I do intend to keep 100% painted as new stuff comes out (not actually a difficult task). Then, when the urge hits, I can just select whatever unit I feel like painting at the time.
I have always been a gamer first, an assembler second (does anyone else enjoy assembly?), and a painter/hobbyist third (only a few decent conversions). I guess maybe I should say collector second...
