9th takes forever just to setup. you have to divide the table in to 24"x 24" sections then roll to put a single piece of terrain (from a list of terrain types) in each of those sections. You then roll an ADDTIONAL 2D3 on a different terrain table and then you get to place those pieces anywhere you want. It's a PITA setting up a board.
Then theres additional objectives that you have to roll for and place...it just adds so much overhead to a game. It took us 4 hours to get playing on Saturday, although a lot of that was due to the fact that he was extremely disorganized, his table was out but his armies and terrain were scattered everywhere, despite him knowing that I was coming over (and supposedly being up since 3a) he wasn't ready to play. argh.
I won't be doing that again (playing 9th) for a while.

Moral of the story: Play more 8th edition, play less 9th Age.

4 hours to get playing sounds like a nightmare! That has to be some kind of record.

4 hours is unusual to set up I think it had to to do with your opponent. It takes a bit longer for terrain stuff if you follow all the 9th rules but really most people didn't fall the whole terrain deployment rules in 8th either. The ability to deploy multiple units at once in 9th is actually pretty nice and speeds up deployment quite a bit potentially. The problem is the rest of the game tends to go a bit slower IME. People unsure on their rules some things are a little more complicated etc. It plays slower then I might guess all things considered.

Part of the problem was having digital rules. I HATE trying to find rules on an iPad (haven't figured out if I can search or not in my Google Drive reader) and so looking up rules took forever.
Yes, I'm sure that a 4 hour setup time had more to do with both of us (I'll take some credit, although I was setting up minis the second I got over to his place) being disorganized.
And I would much rather just setup a board in a mutually agreeable manner, hang all this "put a piece here and another piece here" crap.
To be fair there are a lot of things I like about 9th, but I would much rather just adopt them into 8th than play another game of 9th again.
I'm trying to arrange a game for the 22nd so hopefully I'll have an actual 8th edition battle report to show you guys!
