Hey guys, I recently unboxed my skaven, counted them, organized them and decided that I want to play a game with them. I bought them off a friend YEARS ago when he moved out of state and they've just been sitting in a closet this whole time. Well...no more. Once my Varanguard are finished I want to start working on the rats. (until I've done 5, get bored then move on to something else as seems my pattern) Here's a quick list that I threw together from models that I have. It's designed to be a fun take-all-comers list; I don't know what army I'll be fighting with it. Lords: Grey Seer w/ Screaming Bell & Dispel Scroll Grey Seer w/ 4++ Talisman & an extra warpstone token Heroes: Chieftan BSB w/ heavy armor, shield,Storm Banner Warlock Engineer w/Doom Rocket Warlock Engineer w/Brass Orb Core: 50 slaves w/musician & hw/shield 50 slaves w/musician & hw/shield 50 slaves w/musician & hw/shield 30 Clanrats w/full command & hw/shield & ratling gun 20 Clanrats w/full command & hw/shield & warpfire thrower 20 Clanrats w/full command & hw/shield & poison wind mortar 20 Clanrats w/full command & hw/shield & poison wind mortar 30 Stormvermin w/full command & halberd & warpfire thrower Special: 10 Gutter Runners w/slings and poison 10 Gutter Runners w/slings and poison Rare: Doomwheel Warp Lightning Cannon What are everyones thoughts? The idea behind this list is to throw the slaves at the enemy then shoot them with the weapons teams while they're in combat. flank with the smaller units of clanrats and stormvermin. I just put together a bunch of giant rats so I'm thinking of making some rat darts to help with redirection, to (hopefully) buy myself an extra turn of shooting/magic but I'm unsure where the points should come from. Any skaven generals out there? This will literally be the first time I've ever fought with them instead of against them. I'm supposed to have 2 more doomwheels, another warp lightning cannon, a hellpit and a plague furnace but I couldn't find them, they may have gotten lost I can take pictures if you'd like. But there are ZERO models painted in this army so they wouldn't be very pretty. Time will fix that though! EDIT: My game is on Saturday with these guys

I had fought countless Skaven SAD armies during the 6th edition but never during the 8th (location forbids). I have their 8th Army book and can see they are still very mean. No suggestion though as frankly I have no clue for now. The only thing I can chime in is how to paint them fast and most lazily as possible (and still look passable on Tabletop). Just spray your 300 models comprehensively with Rhinoxhide basecoat, then do it quite lightly with Mournfang Brown Spray. Voila, the army is ready. All Skaven look the same anyway

First thoughts: - love the gutter runners - slaves should get in the way and die. No extra stuff. Extra points should go towards more slaves - you have no heavy hitters. Add some through stormvermin or a-bomb. Otherwise you will have a problem fighting low armour save armies
EDIT: Ok, on bigger screen now, I see the stormvermin :-)
Who is pushing the bell and where is the second seer going?

I could add Rat Ogres as a heavy hitter I have around 8 of those. I do have 50 Stormvermin so maybe I'll just increase the current unit size. The shields on the slaves are because the models have shields (They're almost entirely IoB models) and because I find that 6++ parry save tasty; so much fun when it works. I tweaked the list a little last night what about this one: Lords: Grey Seer w/ Screaming Bell & Dispel Scroll,Skalm Heroes: Chieftan BSB w/ heavy armor, shield,Storm Banner Warlock Engineer w/Doom Rocket Warlock Engineer w/Brass Orb Core: 54 slaves w/musician & hw/shield 54 slaves w/musician & hw/shield 54 slaves w/musician & hw/shield 40 Clanrats w/full command & hw/shield & ratling gun 20 Clanrats w/full command & hw/shield & warpfire thrower 20 Clanrats w/full command & hw/shield & poison wind mortar 20 Clanrats w/full command & hw/shield & poison wind mortar 35 Stormvermin w/full command & halberd & warpfire thrower Special: 10 Gutter Runners w/slings and poison 10 Gutter Runners w/slings and poison 8 Poison Wind Globadiers w/poison wind mortar Rare: Doomwheel Warp Lightning Cannon I could drop one of the small clanrat units for some ROgres and/or more stormvermin. Just realized I also need some rat darts in there (units of 5 Giant rats w/packmaster arranged 2x3) for redirection and combat delaying.

Looking good. So who is pushing the bell?p And rat darts are glowing green awesomeness. Well...without actually having warpstones..

I was thinking the unit of 40 clanrats could push the bell
I'm thinking to add a little more punch against things like knights i could also take an assassin with weeping blades and a potion of strength.
There's also always the fellblade...

I prefer the second list.
...that is a lot of rats!
Loving the unit of 35 Stormvermin.
I think if you wanted the Rat dart you could minimise one of the Skaven slaves units, they are just their to pop anyway and this would give you 2 pleb units rather than one. I don't think you will be able to get all your units within range of the Bsb all the time so a small, plebby, musician less slave unit on the outskirts could still serve a valid purpose and let you have a rat dart.

I was thinking the unit of 40 clanrats could push the bell Ding ding, that is the correct answer. You win breeding rights for 2 months and a rat-ogre. Do not waste the Stormvermin on this. I was thinking the unit of 40 clanrats could push the bell I'm thinking to add a little more punch against things like knights i could also take an assassin with weeping blades and a potion of strength. I like assassins. The problem is that I always put them in my gutter runner unit and that's not always the best place. Also note that the potion of strength must be drunk when he's visible so that takes some timing. I like that one too, did some great damage to OnG last time I used it. Will need to join the Stormvermin and can add some extra oomph.

Looks like this game may not happen this weekend; he's going out of town Saturday night/Sunday morning for some kind of trade show.
Don't know why this keeps us from playing Saturday morning but...we are kind of slow when we play together.

Alright looks like the game is reset for tomorrow. I've tweaked the list a little:
Lords:
Grey Seer w/ Screaming Bell & Earthing Rod,Skalm,Extra Warpstone token
Heroes:
Chieftan BSB w/ heavy armor, shield,Storm Banner
Warlock Engineer w/Doom Rocket
Warlock Engineer w/Brass Orb
Warlock Engineer w/Death Globe
Warlock Engineer w/lvl1 upgrade & dispel scroll
Core:
50 slaves w/musician & hw
50 slaves w/musician & hw
50 slaves w/musician & hw
40 Clanrats w/full command & hw/shield + warpfire thrower
30 Clanrats w/full command & hw/shield + warpfire thrower
25 Clanrats w/full command & hw/shield + warpfire thrower
20 Clanrats w/full command & hw/shield + poison wind mortar
35 Stormvermin w/full command, halberd, & Razor Standard + poison wind mortar
5 Giant rats w/packmaster
5 Giant rats w/packmaster
5 Giant rats w/packmaster
5 Giant rats w/packmaster
Special:
9 Gutter Runners w/slings and poison
9 Gutter Runners w/slings and poison
Rare:
Doomwheel
Warp Lightning Cannon
Plan is to skitterleap warlocks to redirect units while throwing/shooting their toys at point blank range. Rat darts are there to redirect, challenge enemy redirectors and provide free drops. Also the darts will be sacrificed to (hopefully) keep something nasty like skullcrushers from fighting me all/most of the game with some timely redirects. Then the overall plan involves locking them down with slaves then shooting them with warpfire throwers and poison wind mortars while moving clanrats and stormvermin into the flanks to finish them off.
Warp lightning cannon and doomwheel (really wish I had 2 of each) are there to kill monsters. Gutter runners with their poisoned slings hunt warmachines then will go after chaff and small units of things like archers.
Ring the bell until their ears bleed.
Will it work? Who knows but I do know this. Lots of things will die. Khorne The Great Rat cares not from whence the blood flows

It did ok. I need more things to deal with monsters. A single doomwheel and a cannon does not an effective anti-monster list make.
I did a good job prolonging combat with his (vastly) superior troops; rat darts and skitterleaping engineers ftw there.
In the end combat was joined at the bottom of turn 5. 2 Chaos Knights (from 8) survived to make combat. Those numbers were manageable for my slaves. Only two beasts of Nurgle and the knights made combat.
I was impressed with the poison wind mortars, they did some nice work on plaguebearers (too bad he was making around 60% of his daemonic saves). If I had them on the flank where the warriors were at I don't think more than 1/4 of the warrior unit would have made combat.
Not impressed with the warpfire throwers, however I had no decent targets for them either. This game had me wishing for ratling guns to pick off his Beasts of Nurgle. I may modify the list a bit to include one or two ratling guns.
I'm thinking I'll drop two units of clanrats in favor of something with more punch (I need a hellpit, another cannon, and another doomwheel in order for me to feel truly content with the list) I also want another grey seer in the list so that I can try and get multiple skitterleaps and more choice in spells. I also think the fellblade would be fun for dealing with monsters too...
The list still needs tweaking stay tuned...
EDIT: The scenario really helped here as we played battle for the pass. It also didn't help as the gutter runners had to come on from one of the short table edges. Having to run every turn and only gaining 4" on their targets was a bit of a bummer. Those poisoned slings would help out a lot against monsters I think.

Yeah, 2 cannons, 2 seers, a HPA, couple of rattling guns and fellblade....methinks you'll be playing a 5000pts game!
Sounds like you had fun, onwards ratty soldiers!
