So...I recently acquired a Dark Elves army. I'm looking to focus my building/painting on a 3000 point "core" that will serve me well. Here's what I came up with last night:
Lords: Supreme Sorceress lvl4/Book of Ashur/talisman of 5++ DARK MAGIC
Heroes: Sorceress lvl2 w/dispel scroll SHADOW MAGIC Master BSB w/heavy armor,sea dragon cloak,shield,cold one,dragonhelm,talisman of 4++
Core: 21 Witch Elves full command/razor standard OR +1M standard...HELP 5 Dark Riders with shield/musician/repeater crossbow
5 Dark Riders with shield/musician/repeater crossbow
5 Dark Riders with shield/musician/repeater crossbow 12 darkshards w/musician 12 darkshards w/musician
Special: 25 blackguard full command standard of discipline War Hydra w/flaming breath 9 Cold One Knights w/full command/flaming standard OR ranger standard (can't make up mind...HELP) Repeater Bolt Thrower Repeater Bolt Thrower
Rare: 5 Warlocks w/master
I'm thinking this will form a decent core with which to make different 2000 point armies, as well as being decent itself at 3000 points.
With no executioners the only source of S6+ are the knights, who are going to be assigned the role of monster hunters. I'm hoping Dark Magic at +6 to cast plus the warlocks and some shadow magic from the lvl2 will help here though.
Thoughts? Anyone out there familiar with Dark Elves? I am not so I tried to come up with a balanced take-all-comers list.

I am not really familiar with Dark Elves but started getting together a force before putting it on the back burner. Your list is not too dissimilar to what I was thinking. I would have some assassins just because. I have some Corsairs painted up too

Book of Ashur is ususally too expensive for what it does, what makes Dark Elves special?

Dark Elves already have +1 to cast Dark Magic. Book of Ashur essentially makes me a lvl 6 wizard for casting attempts. If it's overpriced...oh well.
I want to field an assassin but points get eaten up quickly whenever I make these lists. I have to figure out what I should drop in order to make this work.

I'm building a 2000 Dark Elf army led by my favorite character, Malus Darkblade. That means a huge unit of Cold One knights is prerequisite to take full advantage of Malus' ability to negate Stupidity. But I probably take the Razor banner instead since any fancy terrain has to be occupied by the baddest Druchii unit in history...(scroll down pls) Malus BSB on Cold One with full panoply (heavy armor, Seadragon Cloak, Shield, lance, DawnStone, Ironcurse Icon) Sorceress lv 2 on Cold One with Ring of Hotek, Shadow Sorceress lv 1 with Dispel Scroll, Dark Magic Core: 2*5 Dark Riders with Repeater Xbow, Spear, Shield, Musician 12 Darkshards with Musician 10 Darkshards with Musician Special: 9 Coldone Knights (full command, Razor Banner) 1 Repeater Bolt Thrower Rare: 10 Mengil's Manflayers Total points: 1994. Very manageable numbers of little Elves to paint and still quite competitive. Ps. Book of Ashur is the great joke the High Elves ever peddled to their dark cousins

I prefer the second list ryryak, especially the core section.
mahbruck, how many points are the manflayers? Which rules do you use for them? The original White Dwarf dogs of war rules?

Mahbruck, how many points are the manflayers? Which rules do you use for them? The original White Dwarf dogs of war rules? The point for 10 Mengil's boys is 330 pts for 10 at a 22 pts a piece (with point for Mengil and banner of Kalad included). In the 6th edition, they were easily one of the best regiments of Renown at 19 pts/Druchi. But with the addition of 8th edition's ASF, Murderous Prowess, +1 Armor piercing for Repeater xbows and Shooting on the March, the Flayers are simply the most devastating unit in Dogs of War roster. I use the fanmade 8th edition Dogs of War book by Eliasson but essentially he changed nothing, just added the new rules from the Dark Elves book and calculated the final point cost.

In regards to the first list this looks like a pretty good DE list to me. I had a friend who I played in 8th on a fairly regular basis who used lists similar to this. On the magic standard options either one you have listed is good for those units. I can't even make up my mind on which to suggest as both have their purpose for both units. In regards to the lack of strength 6 attacks I think you would be surprised at the damage output of the witch elves even against high toughness enemies. They put out so many attacks that they can take out T5+ enemies even though they need 6's to wound.

In the past I have only seen Dreadspears used as a bunker unit or more often not appearing in DE lists at all. But I am interested in your thought behind taking them as a horde?
