11 KoTR (FC) standard of discipline
11 KoTR (FC) standard of swiftness
20 Peasant bowmen, skirmish, mus, brazier.
4x 5 Yeomen with mus
5 Pegasus knights with mus.
7 Grail knights std/mus and a razor standard
2x Trebuchets.
We deployed our respective forces and the Tomb Kings finished first gaining the plus one on the roll of to see who goes first. Not that it mattered as the Bretonnia forces took a knee and prayed.
The Bretonnia player won the chance to vanguard first and blocked off the skeleton horsemans potential advance. In addition the remainder of the yeomen advanced as well as the Pegasus knights.
Turn one.
Chariots and necro knights advanced on the left flank while the remainder of the army on the left flank made tentative forward movement. The magic phase was a good one (11-6) and a boosted protection spell was cast, the casket was dispelled but there was little else in range. Shooting from the chariots killed a yeoman but not enough to cause a panic test.
The yeomen moved away from the Tomb Kings, the flanking KoTR moved around the wood and the Pegasus knights moved further round to the right. The magic phase was a bit of a let down (3-3) so it was easy to dispel the attempted throne of vines. Both treb shots at the casket scattered wide of the mark.
Turn two.
Both scorpions came in from below and were deployed near the grail knights, unable to charge they just moved to a position where they could do next turn. The Chariots and necro knights moved slightly further forward not willing to get too close to the Grail knights and using the impassable terrain to protect themselves on the left. The horsemen moved forward and used the woods to their left as a protection from the Pegasus knights. The magic phase was a bit of a non event this time (7-3) boosted version of protection was cast and again the casket was dispelled.
The Pegasus knights declared a charge but ended up moving only a few inches forward against the hierotitan. In reaction to the scorpions the yeomen moved out of arc and past the charge arc of the chariots. The other unit did a similar action to avoid the scorpion. The grail knights while capable of taking a flank charge from a scorpion didn’t want me pinned in a combat with the chariots and necro knights bearing down on them. The Paladin on Pegasus moved to threaten a charge in the next turn. The KoTR on the left (with the banner of swiftness) were then moved to a position to charge in the next turn, a quick discussion about what it can or can’t charge took place. The archers moved to protect the trebuchets and at least have a chance to shoot the scorpions. Magic phase (12-9) With Arkhan adding five to any dispel meant it was almost impossible to cast anything. Last spell cast when there were no dispel dice was the throne of vines. As it happens the failed charge of the Pegasus knights against the hierotitan wasn’t an issue as he was subject to a direct hit on the first treb shot, 6 wounds later and the model was removed.
Turn three.
Cat amongst the pigeons! Scorpion charged the peasant bowmen, even with the BSB nearby able to use his leadership of 12” and a reroll they ran off of the table. With no charges to declare the chariots moved forward with the intention of hitting the grail knights, the necro knights turned to face the KoTR and yeomen as did the larger unit of skeleton warriors with Arkhan at their head. The magic phase (12-5) was good but a failed boosted protection spell (17) ended the hierophants phase early. Soul blight was cast by Arkhan with irresistible force this didn’t really have an effect on the Bret, the roll on the miscast table caused Arkhan to lost that spell and the fate of Bjuna. Chariots fired at the yeomen but failed to hit anything.
Charge! Pegasus knights into the left flank of the skeleton warriors, paladin on a Pegasus into the same unit from the right. The KoTR charged the casket. The magic phase (9-8) was once again a bit of a damp squib, chain lightning dispatched a couple of skeleton horsemen and jumped to the tomb guard, just a single casualty against them and it jumped to the large skeleton block causing five casualties, it fizzled out after that. The trebs tried to hit the snakes but missed. The casket went pop and didn’t affect the knights, they over ran off the table to avoid the large unit of skeletons flanking them in the next turn. The Pegasus knights battered the skeletons for just a single wound in return, hierophant dies but the majority of the units pass their leadership tests with ease.
Turn 4.
Large skeleton unit charges the Pegasus knights, Tomb guard charge the KoTR with BSB. With the grail knights turning around they now threatened the flank of the chariots and maybe the scorpion, trying to minimise the impact (no pun intended) and these now had to try and get out of the way! The magic phase (6-3) was uneventful, nothing cast and a dispel scroll used. Combat between KoTR and TG was a draw. However the Pegasus knights lost and rolled poorly for their flee and were run down (the embarrassment)
Paladin on Pegasus charges rear of the tomb guard, (the +2 bonus swings the balance and the brets win, however not by enough to make a real difference) magic phase (9-7) again a lot shut down and another dispel scroll was used this turn but Iceshard blizzard was on against the Tomb guard minimising the quality of their hits, with the king present they need 3’s to hit, the spell means they now need 4’s. Trebs try and hit the snakes and this time manage to kill one of them, they wound another.
Turn 5.
Snakes try moving to face knights, large unit of skeletons move into position after their combat with the Pegasus knights but the scorpion and chariots won’t be out of the grail knight arc. Magic phase (10-6) Soul blight on the KoTR in combat with the Tomb Guard, purple sun was dispelled using the silver mirror but it failed to wound the caster. Shooting this turn and combat between the Tomb guards and the Paladin/KoTR has swung in the Brets favour despite losing the heavens prophetess.
Grail Knights charge the scorpion basically running straight over it and into the flank of the chariots. The other KoTR aren’t in charge arc of the snakes so just avoid them. Combat continues with the Tomb Guard but the Paladin is killed to a killing blow which basically evens up the combat. Magic phase (12-6) quite frankly not much to do as most of the units are out of range, Flesh to stone on the Grail Knights giving then +4T. Trebs hit the snakes and kill another leaving a single snake in the final turn.
Turn 6.
Snake turns towards the Knights rear but cannot get a charge off. Large unit of skeletons turn towards TG/KoTR combat. Magic (5-5) purple sun cast at the knights but is easily dispelled, I say easy but it was squeaky bum time! Combat was a bit of a grind with both units struggling, the knights needing 4’s to hit and wound while the tomb guard needed 3’s to hit and wound but couldn’t get through the knights armour. Grail knights kill all the chariots without loss.
Grail knights move towards the Tomb Guard and KoTR, on the left the other unit of KoTR turn and face the remaining necro knight but it’s more for appearance than anything else. Magic phase (11-7) Prophetess casts dwellers at the large skeleton unit it kills 23 and more importantly Arkhan gets the good news. Combat between the BSB and Tomb Kings units grind into a stalemate as the battle ends…
Brets score 1618 victory points and an additional 75 for banners totalling 1693 points.
Tomb Kings score 989.
A difference of 704 points (14-6)
